Charles Ellis Barnett


COLLIERVILE, Tenn. — Col. Charles Ellis Barnett Sr., 74, retired Colonel in the United States Marine Corps and self-employed appraiser, died Friday, June 8, 2012 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Collierville.  
Funeral services will be held today at 2:00 p.m.. at North Oxford Baptist Church with Rev. Gary Richardson officiating.  Burial will follow in Union Baptist Church Cemetery in Sardis. Visitation will be held today from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. at North Oxford Baptist Church.

Born in Senatobia, he held memberships in the Quarterback Club and the Tip-off Club.  He was also a member of the North MS Realtors Association and North Mississippi Builders Association.  A Colonel in the United State Marine Corps, he completed three tours in Vietnam and served in Dessert Storm.   

Survivors include his wife, Jan Barnett of Collierville; one daughter, Beth Baggett of Oxford; two sons, Charlie Barnett Jr. of Covington, La. and Louis Barnett of Miliani, HA; two step-children, Michele Dane of Omaha, Neb. and David Dane of Baltimore, Md; two sisters, Nicky Barnett of Sardis  and Mary Ann Arnold of Horn Lake; one brother, Glenn Barnett of Sardis,  and nine grandchildren.

Wanda Kay Moore Brinson

SARDIS — Wanda Kay Moore Brinson, 58, died Thursday, June 7, 2012, at her residence.
A memorial service was  held Monday at Sardis Lake Baptist Church with Rev. Kevin Crofford officiating.

Brinson, born in Sardis to Georgie Frances and Arthur S. Moore Jr. on January 22, 1954, was  raised in Sardis by her grandparents, the late Charlie and Pat Dettor. She attended North Panola High School and then went on to nursing school. She worked as a surgery nurse for Semmes-Murphy Clinic in Memphis, until retirement and then began her career as a traveling nurse; where  she most recently worked in California.

Survivors include: her husband of 14 years, Vernon Brinson of Sardis; two brothers, Edward Moore  of  Ridgeland,, James “Jimbo” Moore  of Brandon; two sisters, Trisha Sears and Johna Sheley  of Sardis; mother, Georgie Frances Dettor Bryant of Sardis.

Dorothy Callie DeVane


COMO – Dorothy Callie DeVane, 85, died Thursday, June 7, 2012, at her residence.

Graveside services were held on Saturday, June 9 at Harmontown Cemetery. Ray-Nowell Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Mrs. DeVane was a member of Lee Street Baptist Church in Valdosta, Ga.

She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Zeke DeVane of Como; three sons, John Thomas DeVane of Sevierville, Tenn., Charles Richard DeVane of Washington, D.C. and Dr. Jerry Allan DeVane  of Cleveland, Tenn.; sister, Ann Norman of Hahira, Ga.; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.   Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. 

Margaret L. Evans


BATESVILLE — Margaret L. Evans, 72, died Wednesday, June 6, 2012, at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis.

Services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Cooleys’ Mortuary. Pastor Zannie Leland Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Macedonia Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Macedonia M.B. Church and Friday from noon until 1 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary.

Evans, born May 15, 1940, in Batesville, to Howard Curtis Jones and Queen Elizabeth Morgan, was a retired educator for South Panola School District. She graduated from Mississippi Valley State, University of Mississippi and Indiana University. She was a member of Macedonia M.B. Church and Panola Chapter No. 2 Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include: two daughters, Krysti Hudson and D’Juanna “Dee” Henley, both of Memphis; one son, Drexter Evans of Brandon; sister, Virdia Rene Jones Bowdre of Hernando and nine grandchildren.


Douglas Gehringer


 BATESVILLE — Douglas Gehringer, 44, died Sunday, June 10, 2012, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.

Services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at Wells Funeral Home. Father Joe Tonos and Father Sam Messina will officiate. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. with Rosary at 7 p.m.

Gehringer, born January 29, 1968 in Dearborn Heights, Mich. to Robert Peter and Roseann Veronica Heisler, was disabled and was a member of St. Johns Evangelist Catholic Church in Oxford.

Survivors include: his wife, Jennifer Hossenloop Gehringer of Batesville; one daughter, Kaitlyn Gehringer of Batesville; three sons, Preston Gehringer, Tyler Gehringer and Austin Gehringer, all of Batesville; his parents, Robert Peter and Roseann Veronica Heisler Gehringer of Lakeland, Fla.; one sister, Kathy Gehringer of Water Valley; three brothers, Robert Gehringer of Cordova, James “Jimmy” Gehringer of Collierville and Larry Gehringer of Florida.

Lawrence C. “Larry” Smith


BATESVILLE — Lawrence C. “Larry” Smith. 69, of Batesville, formerly of Florence, died Sunday, June 10, 2012, in Collierville, Tenn..  Visitation will begin at 10am Wednesday June 13 at Greenview Memorial Chapel, Florence, Ala. followed by services at 11am in the funeral home.

Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Park.

Bonnie Sunkin


MARKS — Bonnie Sunkin, age 81, formerly of Mt. Home, Ark., died Saturday, June 9, 2012, at Quitman County Hospital.

Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 18, 2012 at Hollywood Baptist Church in Sledge with Reverend Roy Hartzell officiating.

Sunkin,  born September 26, 1930 in Morehouse, Mo. to the late Ralph Lee and Marie Huffman Berry, was a retired beautician and member of Hollywood Baptist Church in Sledge. She was preceded in death by: two husbands, Willard Whiteside and Jack Sunkin and one daughter, Darlene Whiteside Lewis.

Survivors include: daughter, Brenda Hanson of Galesburg, Ill.; four grandchildren, Todd Lewis of Springield, Ill., Stephanie Lewis of Marquette Heights, Ill., Heida Lewis Miller  of Fort Collins, Colo., Heather Lewis Wood of Eaton Rapids, Mich.; five great-grandchildren; brother, Harold Berry of Crenshaw.
