Memorial Day event will honor war dead

Batesville’s VFW and American Legion members are planning a Memorial Day observance on the Batesville Square at the Downtown Memorial Park on Monday, May 28 at 11 a.m. Retired Air Force Major

Jackie Reed of Sardis will be the guest speaker.

In a special tribute to the Panola Countians who lost their lives in the wars of the 20th and 21st centuries, members of their families or other representatives will be recognized. In a symbolic gesture to honor the memories of the men who died, a flag will be retired in the name of each one. (See John Howell’s column, page A4.)

The South Panola High School AFJROTC will present the colors and Robert Rawson will offer the invocation. Harry Bryan will sing the national anthem. Jerry Lightsey will sound taps.

Everyone is invited.
