Jerry B. Estridge

Jerry B. Estridge, age 62, died Thursday afternoon 4/5/12 at Baptist Memorial Hospital of North Mississippi in Oxford.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, 4/9/12, at Bethel Cemetery, Enid, with Reverend Rayford Ables presiding. The Estridge family will receive friends on Sunday evening, from 5-8 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home.

Jerry was born to Vernon Boe and Mabel Epps Estridge on Feb. 23, 1950 in Batesville. He retired from the MS Hwy Patrol after 25 years of service. Jerry was an avid hunter, fisherman and he enjoyed playing golf.

His survivors include, his wife, Sophea San Estridge of Enid; daughter, Paige Estridge Whitten (Mark) of Courtland, MS; 2 sons, Eric Estridge (Olivia) of Batesville, Jay Estridge (Aimee) of Brandon; and 4 grandchildren.

John Randall Alexander

John Randall Alexander age 50, died Thursday evening 4/5/12 from a auto accident.

Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Wells Funeral Home when they become available.

Earl Wayne Broome Sr.

LEE’S SUMMIT, MO -Earl Wayne Broome Sr., 93, died Tuesday, April 3, 2012 in Lee’s Summit, Mo.

Services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 7, in Lee Chapel at First Baptist Church, Batesville, with Dr. Tommy Snyder officiating. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until service time on Saturday. Interment will follow in Magnolia Cemetery. Wells Funeral Home has charge.

Broome was born August 18, 1918 in Batesville to the late John C. and Flora Hawkins Broome. He was a graduate of Mississippi State University, and was an active member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corps. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Batesville, where he served as a deacon.

While a resident of Mississippi, he worked at Grenada Farms as an accountant, served as the Administrator for Panola County, and worked for the Irby Ford dealership in Batesville.  In 1956 Earl joined General Motors Corporation in Memphis and  retired in 1983 as the Kansas City Branch Manager for Motors Holding Division of General Motors.

He was active in the General Motors Retirees Club, was a member of Wornall Road Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday School teacher for many years, sang in the choir, and served as a deacon. He also  worked with the Boy Scouts for many years was an honorary warrior in the tribe of Mic-O-Say. He served as a docent at the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library, a member of the John Knox men’s choir, and a member of the Honorary Board of Directors for Baptist Hospital.

Survivors include: his wife of 69 years, Mary Alice (Whitaker), Lee’s Summit; three sons, Earl Broome Jr. of Lexington, Ky., Paul Broome  of Grain Valley, Mo., Joe Broome of Overland Park, Kan., 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren.

Gerald Eugene “Jerry” Dettor

SARDIS – Gerald Eugene “Jerry” Dettor, 78, died Monday, April 2, 2012 at Gold Strike Casino.

Services were held Thursday at Sardis Presbyterian Church. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery. Ray-Nowell Funeral Home had charge.

Dettor, born May 21, 1933, to the late James Shelby Dettor and Emily Josephine Dorr Dettor, was a postal employee for the United States Postal Service.

He was a member of Sardis Presbyterian Church where he served as deacon and was church treasurer for 34 years. He was an Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a former member of the Sardis Lions Club, former firefighter for the Sardis volunteer fire department and former Alderman for the City of Sardis. He was a member of the Sardis Community Coffee Club.

Survivors include: two daughters, Audrey Joiner and her husband, Jimmy of Raleigh, N.C. and Anita Hays of Memphis; one sister, Mary Helen Nettleton of Memphis; one brother, James Shelby Dettor Jr. of Palestine, Texas; two grandchildren, David Evan Joiner of Raleigh, N.C. and James Andrew Hays of Memphis.

Memorials may be made to Sardis Presbyterian Church.

Gladys Harris

SARDIS – Gladys Harris, 68, died Wednesday, March 28, 2012, at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis.

Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Shiloh C.M.E. Church in Sardis. Pastor Theo Stephen will officiate. Visitation will be held Friday from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.

Harris, born Sept. 17, 1943, in Sardis, to Roosevelt Lewis and Lucinda Wheatley, was a retired factory worker and a member of Shiloh C.M.E. Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Lydia Harris of Water Valley; four sons, Willie Harris, Timothy Harris and Gregory Harris, all of Sardis and Shannon Harris of Memphis; three sisters, Dorothy Robertson of Tulsa, Okla., Mary House of Sardis and Emma Anthony of Kankakee, Ill.; seven brothers, George Lewis of Sardis, Alvin Lewis of Holly Springs, Roosevelt Lewis of Chicago, James Lewis, Calvin Lewis, Larry Lewis and Joe Lewis, all of Batesville; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Joe Willie Harris

COLDWATER – Joe Willie Harris, 51, died Monday, April 2, 2012, at his residence. He was the brother of Louis T. Harris of Como.

Services will be held Saturday at Hickory Grove M.B. Church in Coldwater. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Felix Cauthen Funeral Home has charge.

Harris was a member of the Men and Boys Club of the church. He was a factory worker.
Survivors along with his brother, include: his wife, Kim Spearman Harris; two daughters, Kamesha Spearman of Coldwater and Jarquezeeveus Leverson of Senatobia; his mother, Della Mae Harris of Coldwater; four sisters, Mae Ella Hammond of Senatobia, Verdia H. Lee, Bettie J. Harris and Sherry V. Harris, all of Coldwater and one brother, Eddie D. Harris.

Annie Madlock Harris

GARY, Ind. – Ms. Annie Laura “Lucky” Madlock Harris, 89, died March 6, 2012, at the home of her son, Revance and wife Vivian in Gary.  

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, April 14, at 2 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness on Highway 6 West in Batesville.

Ms. Harris was born August 9, 1922 in Sardis, to Leslie and Matilda Madlock. She joined the McIvor M.B. Church in Sardis and attended public school in Sardis. Ms. Harris later became one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1975.

Daniel Fisher Joiner

BATESVILLE – Daniel Fisher Joiner, 69, died Thursday, March 29, 2012, at his residence.  

Services will be held Saturday, April 7, at 11 a.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary with interment in Batesville Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary. Pastor Zannie Leland Jr. will officiate.   

Joiner was born June 2, 1942, in Marks to Bubba Joiner and Ada Griffin.  He was a retired machine operator and member of Second Concord M.B. Church in Batesville.

Survivors include his wife, Norma Figgs Joiner of Batesville; one sister, Earnestine Hood of Ottawa, Ill. and two brothers, Charles Griffin of Ottawa and Randy Griffin of Blytheville, Ark.

Thomas Jean Jones

SARDIS–Thomas Jean Gipson Jones, 53, died Monday, April 2, 2012, at her residence in Sardis.

A native of Panola County, she was the widow of Rev. James Curtis Jones and was the daughter of the late Tom Gipson and Agnes Daniel Gipson. She was a member of New Rock Hill MB Church in Sardis where she served as an associate minister. She was a retired employee of John Kyle State Park.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 7, 2012, at New Rock Hill MB Church. Rev. Charles Becton will officiate. Burial will be in St. Peter Cemetery in Batesville. Kenneth I. Roberson Funeral Home of Sardis is in charge of the arrangements.

She is survived by three sisters – Sammie L. Jefferson, Ruby Leach, and Lydia Spain; and four brothers – Clarence Gipson, John Gipson, Lorenzo Gipson, and Douglas Gipson.

Visitation will be from 12 Noon to 5 PM and family hour 5 – & PM on Friday at the funeral home.

Anna Lou Magee

POPE – Anne Lou Magee, 87, died Wednesday, April 4, 2012, at her residence.

Services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Liberty Hill Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Dickins Funeral Home has charge.

Magee, born Aug. 26, 1924, to the late Ozzie L. Morris and Emma Texana Still Morris, was a retired manager of Hardin’s Bakeries and a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church. She was a Sunday School teacher for the children and adult classes for over 20 years, WMU, GA and choir member.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Grady Magee.

Survivors include: four sons, James M. Magee of Courtland; Larry Magee of Jackson, Bobby Magee and Johnny Magee, both of Pope.

Ester Sholar

COLDWATER- Ester Sholar, 89, died Monday, April 2, 2012. She was the grandmother of Panolian staff member Felecia Neal.

Services will be held Saturday at noon at Mt. Olive M.B. Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery in Byhalia. Gillespie Funeral Home has charge.

Sholar was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Sholar.

Survivors include: daughters, Willie Mae Welch, Climmie Mays, Verna Faulkner, Linnie Faulkner, Dorothy Sholar and Celestine Sharp; one son, Louis Sholar; 18 grandchildren and a host of great-great-grandchildren.

Lacardo D. Moore

BATESVILLE – Lacardo D. Moore, 26, died Thursday, March 29, 2012, in Batesville from a homicide.

Services will be held Friday, April 6, at 1 p.m. at Batesville Jr. High School Auditorium with interment in Mt. Level Cemetery in Sardis. Pastor Zannie Leland Jr. will officiate. Cooley’s Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Moore was born October 31, 1985 in Sardis, to the late Anthony Shorter and Teresa Moore of Batesville.  He was a stocker for Save A Lot Grocery in Batesville.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his grandmothers, Annie Moore of Batesville and Annette Watson of Sardis; his grandfather, Joe Willie Watson of Memphis; his great-grandmother, Ethel Moore of Batesville; two daughters, LadaiJah Moore and Carnlayah Moore, both of Oxford; two sons, LaCardo Moore Jr. of Oxford and Cartavis Reed of Batesville; two sisters, Taraneka Moore and Shanesia Chamber, both of Batesville and two brothers, Jamarcus Moore and Michael Nelson, both of Sardis..

Shundarrus Keshun Moore

BATESVILLE – Shundarrus Reshan Moore, 17, died Thursday, March 29, 2012,  in Batesville from a homicide.

Services will be held Friday, April 6, at 1 p.m. at Batesville Jr. High School Auditorium with interment in Mt. Level Cemetery in Sardis. Pastor Zannie Leland Jr. will officiate.   Cooley’s Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Moore was born August 19, 1994 in Senatobia, to Eddie Waves of Memphis and Teresa Moore of Batesville.  He attended South Panola High School.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include two grandmothers, Annie Moore of Batesville and Essie Mae Perry of Memphis; two great-grandmothers, Ethel Moore of Batesville and Vera Fields of Memphis; two brothers, Jamarcus Moore  of Sardis and Eddie Gene Wade Jr. of Memphis; and four sisters, Taraneka Moore and Shanesia Chamber, both of Batesville and Destiny M. Bradford and Brandy N. Bradford, both of Memphis.

Tommie Joe Smith

SARDIS – Tommie Joe Smith, 68, died Wednesday at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 7, 2012, at Wells Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Jimmy Crumb presiding. Burial to follow at Rosehill Cemetery in Sardis. Visitation will be held on Friday evening from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home.

Smith was born to the late Leon Clifton and Orede King Smith on July 4, 1943 in Tyro. He was  a Baptist. Mr. Smith was an Auto Body Repairman for over 45 years having worked with Brown & Gullege of Senatobia,  and later he worked for Holcomb Body Shop.

He was survived by his wife, Marsha Storar Smith of Sardis; four sons, Tony Smith of Mt. View, Ark., Wayne Smith and Mike Smith, both of Loxxahoma and William Craig Burdett of Southaven; daughter, Michelle Smith of Mountain View; brother, Gene Smith of Lake Cormorant; 10 Grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Serving as pallbearers for Mr. Smith’s service will be: Kevin Shideler, Tim Smith, Joseph Smith, Michael Burdett, Jerry Pafford, Buck Felty, Bret Blanks and Bill Schamehorn.
