Batesville sales up, outpace state totals


The city of Batesville’s sales tax increased eight percent reflecting January sales, one percent above the Mississippi average.

Batesville’s share of the collections was $276,296, representing approximately 18 percent of the seven cent sales tax paid by consumers.

The city’s Tourism and Economic Development Tax, a three percent tax on lodging and restaurants, increased a modest one percent bringing in $81,939 to the city. That total represents February sales.
The state’s fiscal year begins July 1 and collections reflected by the year-to-date figures indicate a five percent increase from the Tourism tax with $715,839 collected and three percent increase in sales tax with $2,515,576 collected with eight of twelve months represented.

The City of Sardis had a six percent increase over January of last year, receiving $25,943 in sales tax diversions  and $7,755 for February in tourism taxes, 77 percent more than last February.

Como’s share of sales tax collected indicated an 18% increase over January 2011 with the city receiving $12,790. The Como tourism tax decreased three percent from February 2011 to 2012 with Tax Commission figures showing $4,845 in collections.

Other Panola County municipalities showed the following figures as their share of January collections with percentage of increase or decrease as follows: Crenshaw, $4,586, +2; Crowder, $1,843, +32 and Pope, $3,787,+50.

Other nearby municipalities showed the following figures as their share of January collections with percentage of increase or decrease as follows: Charleston, $26,413, +2; Clarksdale, $212,488, +5; Grenada, $289,599, +8; Lambert, $3,079, +15; Marks, $17,287, -2; Oakland,  $5,985, +19; Oxford, $465,419, +9; Senatobia, $139,645, +2; Taylor, $16,86, +28; and Water Valley, $36,916, +9.
