Defendant says will ‘try’ to leave pot alone

Judge Bill McKenzie referred several cases to the grand jury during Batesville Municipal Court held Wednesday.

Anthony Frost, 105 Cole Dr., Batesville, was referred to the grand jury for grand larceny.

Verkengie L. Towns, 3958 Woodruff Rd., Batesville, was referred to the grand jury for grand larceny by alledgedly stealing scrap metal from Wardlaw Farms and taking it to Martin Brothers.

William F. Youngblood, 693 North Loop Dr., Batesville, bonded out prior to court and was referred to the grand jury for molesting.

Leslie D. Vanlandingham Jr., 138 CR 107 Water Valley, paid his fines of $204 in full prior to court.

James N. Vest, 938 Seven Road, Batesville, entered a not guilty plea to public drunk. A trial was set for November 23.

Sean C. Caine, 3134 Hwy. 6 East, Marks, paid his fines of $529 in full for public drunk and possession of alcohol by a minor in full prior to court.

 Lydia A. Dungan, 202 Bruce St., Batesville, had a case continued for possession of alcohol by a minor and DUI-first.

The city’s prosecuting attorney, Bob Morris, requested a continuance.

“We are working on a plan for minors with alcohol,” said Morris.

Morris told the judge they would talk to the Board of Aldermen first, but the program they wanted would be a six-month program like the drug court program including alcohol and drug tests.
The trial was continued until November 30.

Shemar N. Hughes, 1330 Hadorn Rd. No. 5, Batesville, entered a not guilty plea to petit larceny. A trial was set for November 23.

Ontarious J. Scurlock, 253 James Rd., Batesville, had a charge for disorderly conduct dismissed after the affiant, Erica Griffin failed to appear to prosecute.

Scurlock also had old fines of $147 that have been due since September 10, 2010.

“I paid $60 on it,” Scurlock replied after the judge told him to have the fines paid in full or serve 60 days in jail.

“Do you have a receipt?” asked McKenzie.

Scurlock said he did not have a receipt.

“Did you know this court does not take partial payments and hasn’t for over 28 years?”

James D. Willie, 16 Courtney Village, Courtland, had a warrant issued for his arrest after failing to appear for charges for possession of marijuana in a vehicle and no driver’s license.

Jamal D. Dunn, 1040 Lawrence Bros. Rd., Batesville, was fined $650 after entering a guilty plea to possession of marijuana in a vehicle.

“What are you going to do?” asked McKenzie.

“Try to keep it (marijuana) off of me,” replied Dunn.

“Try?” The judge responded.

“Don’t fool with it! Get your fines paid and leave the drugs alone,” McKenzie stated.

Billy Ray Tate Jr., 317 Mosier Rd., Enid, entered the city’s work program for 13 days to satisfy fines of $650 for possession of marijuana in a vehicle.

Tate’s mother was standing with him as he entered his guilty plea.

“What have you done, Mama?” asked McKenzie.

“I knocked him upside the head,” she replied.

“We need to put you to work,” said McKenzie — to the defendant, not his mother, as he entered Tate in the work program.

Richard E. Johnson, 18713 Hwy. 51 North, Sadis, had a warrant issued for his arrest after failing to appear to answer a possession of paraphernalia charge.

Robbie Cooper, 890 Quitman Ave., Crowder, entered a guilty plea to shoplifting from Wal-Mart and was fined $1,124.

Erika F. Qualls, 230 Dunson, Crowder, entered a guilty plea to shoplifting from Wal-Mart. She was fined $1,124.

Glenda F. Armstrong, 230 Dunson, Crowder, entered a guilty plea to shoplifting from Wal-Mart. She was fined $1,124.

Jennifer Westmoreland, 858 Magnolia Circle, Sardis, had old fines of $544 that have been due since September 2011.

Lindsey F. Gammel, 17 Harmon Cirlce, Batesville, was fined $145 for no child restraint.

Ronnie G. Moore, 201 Gordon Dr., Batesville, had a case dismissed for running a stop sign.

Rick Mills, Batesville, was fined $594 for no proof of insurance.

Gregory W. Fondren, 179 Road Ext., Batesville, was fined $145 for driving on wrong side of road. He had a no proof of insurance ticket dismissed after he provided proof he had insurance.

Antonyo D. Ellis, 109 Everett St., Batesville, entered a not guilty plea to loud music. A trial was set for November 16.

Corey W. Lee, 102 Allen St., Batesville, was fined $295 for no tag and no proof of insurance.

Sam Horton, 163 Keith Dr., Courtland, was fined $748 for driving while license suspended and expired tag.

Nico Mario Agate, 567 Rockhill Rd., Sardis, entered a not guilty plea to loud music. A trial was set for November 16.

Latorie L. Floyd, 361 Bethlehem Rd., Batesville, was fined $1,091 for expired tag, no proof of insurance and no driver’s license.

Eddie James Hayes, 2228 Fields Rd., Tunica, was told to return Nov. 2 for tickets for improper equipment and no driver’s license.
