A 21-year-old murder suspect arrested last Thursday is not cooperating with police, Batesville Police Chief Tony Jones said Monday.

Police allege Derrick A. Burdette shot Herman Smith January 26 while Smith sat in an automobile in Still Trailer Park.

Smith was shot multiple times but survived the shooting for several hours. He died Thursday morning at The Med in Memphis.

Cooley’s Mortuary is in charge of arrangements, which were incomplete at press time Monday.

Smith had lived in the trailer park, in a mobile home at 114 Clinton Street, where he was shot. But police were unsure if he was living there at the time of the shooting.

Still Trailer Park is located west of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in west Batesville.

A 911 call reporting the shooting was made at 8:44 p.m. to the Batesville Police Department, said Jones.

Smith’s death marked the first homicide in Batesville since 2008, police said.
