Katie Lou Alford

BATESVILLE–Katie Lou Alford, 82, died Wednesday, January 12, 2011, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center.

Services were Friday at Dickins Funeral Home. Burial was in Curtis Union Cemetery.

Alford, born Jan. 14, 1928, to the late Jesper and Louise Hopper Peterson, was a member of McIvor Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Alford.

Survivors include: one son, Billy Alford of Batesville; two daughters, Glenda Reniedo of Baton Rouge, La. and Shirley Sartin of Batesville; one sister, Peggy Drannon of Batesville; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Kate Elizabeth Young Goodwin

BATESVILLE–Kate Elizabeth Young Goodwin, 72, died Friday, January 7, 2011, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.

Services were Sunday at Dickins Funeral Home. Burial was in Friendship Cemetery in Charleston.

Survivors include: four daughters, Sybil Shields and Beverly Williams of Courtland, Linda Harris of Batesville and Nina Freeman of Water Valley; two sons, Tommy Glenn Goodwin and Roy Thomas Goodwin of Charleston; one sister, Hazel Cutledge of Tupelo; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

James “Buddy” Wesley Hudson

BATESVILLE–James “Buddy” Wesley Hudson, 73, died Sunday, January 15, 2011, at his residence.

Memorial services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home. Rusty Robertson will officiate. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until service time.

Hudson, born June 16, 1937, in Oxford, to the late Marvin and Gatha Johnson Hudson, was a member of Rosehill Baptist Church and was a driver for Roadway Express, Rebel Motor Freight and Beard Truck Lines. He served in the United States Army.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Sharon Hudson Cummins.

Survivors include: his wife, Nettie Woodard Hudson of Batesville; two daughters, Wanda Hudson Fatheree of Courtland and Rhonda Hudson Campbell of Yulee, Fla.; three sisters, Annie Lee Ashmore of Tachapie, Calif., Gatha Lillian Lindsey of Bakersville, Calif. and Katy Sue Ryan of Baton Rouge, La. and three grandchildren.

Benny Green Marberry

GRENADA–Benny Green Marberry, 68, died January 14, 2011, at his residence.

Services were Monday at Crowder Baptist Church. Burial was in Crowder Cemetery. Wells Funeral Home had charge.

Marberry, born Aug. 24, 1942, in Batesville, to Myrtle Lee Weaver Marberry and Benjamin Green Marberry Sr., was a member of Paul Baptist Church in Charleston. He worked as a foreman for ICG Railroad for 36 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sherry Jean Marberry.

Survivors include: four daughters, Bonnie Marberry Winters of Grenada, Barbara Gail Hollingsworth of Jackson, Cathy Renee Lee of Grenada and Michelle Marberry King of England, Ark.; two sons, Dwayne Marberry of Grenada and Charles Anthony Marberry of Charleston; two sisters, Lil Hyde of Crowder and Mary Goforth of Longview, Texas; one brother, Lois Marberry of Crowder; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

 

Jack D. Martin

MARKS–Jack D. Martin, 79, died Sunday, January 16, 2011, at Quitman County Nursing Home.

Services will be held Thursday at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Larry Kilgore will officiate. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. Thursday. Wells Funeral Home has charge.

Martin, born May 28, 1931, in Walnut Grove, was a retired barber and was a Baptist. He also served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

Survivors include: one daughter, Regina Martin Morgan of Enumclaw, Wash.; one sister, Betty J. DeLaurenti of Mercer Island, Wash. and two grandchildren.

Verna Leigh Vines

MARKS–Verna Leigh Ellzey Vines, 70, died Thursday, January 13, 2010, at Yalobusha General Hospital in Water Valley.

Services were held Saturday at Wells Funeral Home. Rev. Jay Anderson officiated. Burial was in Springdale Cemetery in Oxford. Wells Funeral Home has charge.

Vines, born Sept. 25, 1940, in Serepta, to Murray and Eva Sartain Ellzey, was an LPN for over 30 years. She was a Baptist.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David Morgan.

Survivors include: one son, Rodney Morgan of Oklahoma City, Okla.; one sister, Janie Ellzey White of Courtland; her mother, Eva Sartain Ellzey of Batesville; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

John Williams Wheeler

TUNICA – John William “Bill” Wheeler of Tunica, brother of Jackie Carver of Pope, died January 15 at age 75. A memorial service will be held at the Tunica First Baptist Church on Tuesday, January 18, at 10 a.m.

Wheeler is also survived by his wife, June Jordan Wheeler; daughter, Janet Wheeler of Southaven; son , John David Wheeler of Southaven; and four grandchildren.

Born October 21, 1935, he was a member of the Elizabeth Primitive Baptist Church.He was an active member of the Tunica Lions Club where he served as the tail twister, past presidentand a recipient of the Melvin Jones award. He also served in the Army  and Army Reserves. He was retired lead salesperson for Case Power & Equipment.
