Newly elected judge will take oath in Batesville 

An investiture ceremony for newly elected Seventeenth Circuit Court Judge Smith Murphey of Batesville is scheduled for 11 a.m. today at the Panola County Courthouse in Batesville.

Retiring Senior Circuit Judge Andrew C. Baker will administer the oath of office.  

Murphey was elected November 2 to fill  the judgeship which Judge Baker  held for more than 32 years.

The district includes DeSoto, Panola, Tallahatchie, Tate and Yalobusha counties.

In Sardis, Chancery Judge Mitchell Lundy will also be sworn in Tuesday, January 4.  

Supreme Court Justice Ann Lamar will administer the oath at the Sardis Courthouse at 8:45 a.m. on the fourth.  

Lundy, who was unopposed in the November election, represents the Third Chancery Court District, which includes the counties of Montgomery, Grenada, Panola, Yalobusha and Tallahatchie.
