After playing two scoreless games, the North Delta Green Wave did not want to leave the District 1-2A jamboree Thursday afternoon at Kirk Academy empty handed.

Senior tailback Tres Brasell blasted into the endzone from five yards out with 6:04 remaining in the game to give the Green Wave a 6-0 victory over Indianola in the final contest of the night. In the two previous games, North Delta battled district foes Kirk and Marshall to a pair of 0-0 ties

“With us playing against district opponents, we did not want to show everything we have on offense,” said second-year head coach Dan Werner. “One of the main goals we wanted to achieve tonight was to block, tackle, catch and run. We ran about five different plays and I think we did that. We did not execute as well as I hoped we would have but we did fly around and hit people on defense. I really felt good about our performance tonight,” said Werner.

North Delta’s game-winning drive started on their own 42-yard line after their first possession stalled at midfield. Consecutive runs of 26 and four yards by John Cody Dalrymple moved the ball to the Indianola 28. Quarterback Bryan ‘B’ Nickle kept the drive alive by converting a four-yard run and 3rd-and-4 to the Colonel 18. Three plays later, Nickle connected with wide receiver Corbin Baker on a 12-yard slant pattern on a 3rd-and 8 play from the 16. Brasell then bolted his way up the middle on the next play for the score. Dalrymple’s PAT failed, leaving the score 6-0.

Indianola had one last chance to tie the game on their last possession only to have the drive stall on the Wave 41 as quarterback Caleb Dotson’s pass fell incomplete on fourth down.

North Delta tallied 76 total yards of offense in the game including 64 yards on the ground. Dalrymple led all rushers with 30 yards on two carries followed by Brasell’s 21 yards on six totes. Michael Magee added two carries for seven yards while Taylor Morris had six yards and Chris Rodgers contributed one carry for three yards. Nickle added two carries for minus three yards. Sy Pritchard led the defensive charge with three tackles and an interception.

In the first game of the day, Magee blocked a 41-yard field goal attempt by Marshall’s Chase Carpenter as time expired to keep the game deadlocked. Brasell led the Green Wave rushing attack with 12 yards while Rodgers added four yards. Nickle meanwhile was a perfect 2-of-2 passing for 20 yards. Baker and Dalrymple caught one pass each.

Morris added eight yards on six carries in the 0-0 tie with the Kirk Raiders. Bailey Guckert contributed with one carry for five yards while Catlin McArthur registered one carry for four yards. Quarterback Derick Shawn completed his only pass of the game with a two yard strike to Tyler Lee. Anthony Pike added a quarterback sack for the North Delta defense while Collin Phillips intercepted a pass.

North Delta will open its 2010 season at home Friday night at 7:30 against Magnolia Heights.
