Some taxes to take a hike for holiday

Batesville is participating in the state’s second Sales Tax Holiday that will take place during a 48-hour time period beginning at 12:01 a.m. Friday, July 30 and ending at 12 midnight Saturday, July 31.

The popular “back to school” event is worth seven percent in savings to consumers as a result of waiving the sales tax on specific items.

The items exempt from sales tax during the Sales Tax Holiday period are identical to those items exempted last year. Clothing and footwear items, meant to be worn next to the body and cost $100 or less per item, are exempt from sales tax during this period.

Accessories such as jewelry, handbags, wallets, watches, backpacks, and similar items do not qualify for the Sales Tax Holiday. Cleats and items worn in conjunction with an athletic or recreational activity are other sample items not eligible. School supplies and computers are not included.

For more information about eligible and non-eligible clothing and footwear items visit www.dor.ms.gov.

Crenshaw is the only Panola municipality which opted to suspend participation in the sales tax holiday.

All retail businesses within the corporate limits of the municipality not participating must charge and remit to the state sales tax on all sales that would normally be exempt under the Sales Tax Holiday.
