Virgie Edward Bill Appleton

OXFORD–– Mr. Virgle Edward “Bill” Appleton, 85, died Sunday, July 18, 2010 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.

Service will be Wednesday, at 10 a.m. in the Waller Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Claire Dobbs and Rev. Frank Poole officiating. Burial will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Waller Funeral Home.

 Born in Panola County, Appleton was a veteran of WWII, having served as a tank driver in the U.S. Army. He retired from the city of Oxford after serving for many years as a policeman and supervisor of the city cemeteries. Mr. Bill was a Mason, a Shriner, a member and usher of Oxford-University United Methodist Church, and formerly attended North Oxford Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Edward Appleton and grandson, Kenneth Alan Sparks.

 Survivors include his wife, Barbara Appleton of Oxford; two daughters, Sarah Jane Appleton Sparks of Pontotoc, and Rebecca Lynne Appleton of Oxford; four sisters, Dorothy Ford and Jewel McGehee, both of Sardis, Martha Fowler of Batesville, and Laura Jeannie Harden of Nesbit, one brother, Macel V. Appleton Sr. of Sardis; twp grandchildren and one great grandchild.

 The family has requested that memorial contributions in Mr. Appleton’s memory be made to: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942.

Jandon Larelle Edwards Jr.

BATESVILLE–– Jandon Larelle Edwards Jr., infant son of Jandon Edwards and Natasha Powell of Batesville, died Wednesday, July 14, 2010, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center.

Services were Saturday at West Batesville Baptist Church. Rev. Kelly Walls Jr. officiated. Burial was in Cistern Hill Cemetery in Como. Cooley’s Mortuary had charge.

Survivors along with his parents include: two sisters, Jasmine Powell, Alia Drummond, both of Batesville; one brother, De’Atwon Davis of Batesville and his grandparents, Maurice and Jimmie Martin of Batesville, Doris Powell of Crowder, Clarence Powell of Batesville, Margaret Pope of Pope and great-grandmother, Effie Vaughn of Como.

Martha Ann Davis Herring

POPE–– Martha Ann Davis Herring, 66, died Saturday, July 17, 2010, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Desoto.

Services will be held today at 11 a.m. at Willow Springs Assembly of God on Pope-Crowder Road. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until service time at the church.  Rev. Tommy Darby will officiate. Wells Funeral Home has charge.

Herring, born Jan. 16, 1944, in Crenshaw, to William Harold and Martha Mae Bradley Davis of Batesville, attended Willow Springs Assembly of God and was a homemaker.

Survivors along with her mother include: her husband, William Cortez Herring of Pope; one daughter, Stacie A. Kendrick of Picayune; one son, William Y. Johnson of Batesville; two step-daughters, Teresa Ann Herring of Palatine, Ill., Tammy Regina Herring of Hoffman Estates, Ill.; two sisters, Beverly Lynn Luke of Eagle Lake, Fla., Becky Bryant of Batesville; five brothers, Eddie H. Davis., Tony M. Davis and Wayne Davis, of all of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Rev. James L. Davis of Booneville, Darnell Davis of Winterhaven, Fla. and five grandchildren.

Tammy Renee Holden

COMO–– Tammy Renee Holden, 47, died Friday, July 16, 2010, at Baptist Memorial Hospital.

Graveside services were held Monday at Bethesda Cemetery in Senatobia. Pate-Jones Funeral Home had charge.

Holden was a member of New Hope Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Joan Holden.

Survivors include: one sister, Angie Seymour of Dublin, Ga. and grandfather, M.W. Holden of Senatobia.

Memorials may be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis.

Willie Viola Jackson

BATESVILLE–– Willie Viola Jackson, 105, died Friday, July 16, 2010.

Services were Sunday at Ray-Nowell Funeral Home in Sardis. Rev. Bob Hickey officiated. Burial was in Union Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Leroy Jackson.

Jackson, born Jan. 16, 1905, to the late Will Johnson and Anna Pruitt Johnson, was a homemaker and a member of Union Baptist Church.

Survivors include: one daughter, Betty Jackson Chance of Sardis; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Union Cemetery Fund, c/o Union Baptist Church in Sardis.

Ida “Nelia” Cornelia Smith

BATESVILLE–– Ida “Nelia” Cornelia Smith, 88, died Friday, July 16, 2010, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center.

Services will be held today at 3 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Cemetery in Pope. Dr. Gary Berry will officiate.

Smith was a member of Pope Baptist Church and a retired factory worker.

Survivors include: two sons, Ricky Smith of Pope, Randy Smith of Southaven; one sister, Shirley Mull of Detroit, Mich.; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
