The 12 and under (12u) Batesville All-Stars SWAT softball team went undefeated in pool play but fell to the Pontotoc Power, 6-2, in the championship game.

Batesville hosted the Dizzy Dean Bash for 47 softball and baseball teams this past weekend. In the end, Batesville played in four championship games and walked away with all four second places, one softball and three baseball.

Thunderstorms which threatened Friday evening remained at bay and the tournament was underway. However, Saturday was a different story as the thunder and lightning storm held off games for about three hours and put the schedule off. Some teams played late into the night, but others opted to play Sunday morning.

The 12u girls only had five teams in the tournament and the championship game was played Saturday evening.

Batesville and Pontotoc were both 2-0 after pool play but with tiebreaker rules, Batesville was the No. 2 team going into tournament play.

Batesville defeated Southaven 12-1 in the first game of tournament play.

In the championship game, the game was scoreless through the first three innings.

Batesville was the visiting team and got one run across the plate in the top of the fourth inning.

Hannah Heafner singled to left to get on base. She worked her way around the diamond to third. On a passed ball, she scored the team’s first run.

Pontotoc answered in bottom of the inning with three runs to take the lead. A couple of defensive throwing errors allowed Pontotoc to get in scoring position. Two of the three runs were earned runs on single RBIs (runs batted in).

Pontotoc held Batesville off the bases and scoreless in the fifth inning, but scored three runs to take a 6-1 lead.

With two outs, Mary Margaret Pearson hit a double RBI to score Haley Lamm from second who had walked to get on base. Though she hit a long one, Katie Hays’ fly ball to left-center was fielded by Pontotoc to end the game.

Hannah Moore took the loss for Batesville, pitching the complete game in five innings.

In pool play, Batesville defeated Southaven 13-2 in the first game Friday afternoon. Sarah Johnson pitched the complete game.

Friday night, Batesville defeated the Calhoun County Chaos 9-0.

8U Batesville Breeze

The 8u Batesville Breeze softball team was 1-1 in pool play defeating Clarksdale 12-6 Friday afternoon. Saturday, the team lost to Southern Pride 13-11.

Sunday morning in tournament play, the Breeze lost to Southaven.
