According to Tiger head coach Alex Bondurant, Tony Conner should be the number one runner in the state in the 200 meter dash and Griffin the number two spot after Saturday’s competition.
The South Panola track team participated in the Chickasaw Conference Meet at Desoto Central High School on Thursday and Saturday bringing home several ribbons.
One of the closest races on Saturday was the 4 x 200 meter relay where Southaven beat out South Panola by .05 points. Southaven won with 1:28.73 and South Panola was clocked at 1:28.78 with the team of Nick Brassell, Tony Conner, Montez Griffin and Greg Hayes.
The number one runner in the state in the 400 meter dash, South Panola’s Griffin, had no problem winning first place with a time of 48.68 over Dontrell Franklin who had a 49.80.
Griffin was not satisfied with his time but said a win is a win.
“I was aiming for a 47,” he said.
The top two places in the 200 meter dash went to South Panola. Tony Conner won with a time of 21.06 and Griffin placed second with a time of 21.59.
Conner took second place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.95 seconds. In the 4×100 meter relay, South Panola’s Brassell, Pierre Conner, Greg Hayes and Tony Conner placed third with a time of 43.42 seconds.
In the 4×400-meter relay, South Panola placed fourth with a time of 3:39.46 with team members Griffin, Deshun Henderson, Al Hentz and Tilmus Jackson.
Brassell won first place in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 40.34 and second place in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.44.
In the boy’s long jump, Marcus Henry took third with distance of 21’. Southaven’s Aaron Williams won with a distance of 22’10”.
In field events on Thursday, Nick Johnson placed second in the shot put with distance of 41’. Johnson also placed third in the discus throw with a distance of 123’. Marcus Henry placed fourth in the triple jump with 40’7”.
Desoto Central won the overall meet with a score of 143.33. Southaven was second with 143 and South Panola placed third with 103. Hernando was fourth with 59.33.
