Congressional candidate Angela McGlowan said Tuesday she is a resident of Mississippi and described as “a lie” a Panolian story that suggested her state residency is unclear.
The Panolian story, which published Tuesday, February 23, said McGlowan is from Lafayette County “though it’s unclear if she owns a home or property in Mississippi.”
McGlowan said she still lives in Oxford and is registered to vote there. She refused to give a physical address, citing privacy concerns.
“I own a Mississippi drivers license. You have to have a physical address to get one,” she told a Panolian reporter.
McGlowan’s residency was mentioned in a 900-word story about the current race for Mississippi’s 1st Congressional District race. She is one of three candidates competing in the June Republican primary.
Prior to the story, a reporter had searched property tax records in Lafayette County through the Mississippi Tax Commission’s Web site. An initial search did not find McGlowan’s name, though a subsequent search did find her listed.
McGlowan, in a phone interview, also threatened to file a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission if The Panolian did not “retract the lie.”
The FCC normally hears complaints related to broadcast communication but has no oversight over print communication.
McGlowan spoke Monday night in Batesville to the Panola County Republican Party. A crowd of about 40 turned out for the event, said county chairman Calvin Land.
Land said the issue of residency was raised at the meeting, where McGlowan also mentioned her Mississippi drivers license.
“She scooted around it a little bit,” Land said of the residency issue.
Land also said attendees were overheard complimenting the candidate after the meeting. Several expressed their intent to vote for her.
