Saturday’s North Panola basketball classic has been cancelled as two teams dropped out, according to North Panola girls head coach Chris Yancy. North Panola will commence with its regular season at the Olive Branch Tournament at Jack Flynn Gymnasium. Monday, they will play Olive Branch at 7 p.m., Thursday vs. Horn Lake at 7 p.m. and Hernando Saturday at 4 p.m. The first home game will be played Saturday, November 21 against Kennedy out of Mound Bayou.
North Delta’s season came to a screeching halt at the hands of Simpson Academy Friday night. The Green Wave fell 27-8 in the first round of the AA playoffs.
The lone score came with 2:14 left in the game on a Tres Brasell 15-yard run. Bryan Nickle converted the two-point attempt. The touchdown capped a 95-yard drive.
The Green Wave logged 273 total offensive yards with 159 rushing and 118 passing yards.
Quarterback Derek Shawn completed nine of 19 passes for 118 yards and threw four interceptions.
Nickle caught three passes for 60 yards. John Cody Dalrymple caught three passes for 26 yards. Other receivers include Corbin Baker one for 17 yards, Michael Magee, one for nine yards and Brasell, one for six yards.
Brasell led the rushers with 76 yards on 22 carries, followed by Nickle with seven for 32 yards and Shawn, two for 19 yards. Magee had four carries for 28 yards.
The South Panola Tigers finished undefeated in 1-6A with a 7-0 record after shutting out Desoto Central 38-0 Thursday night. The Tigers have homefield advantage for the first round of the playoffs Friday night and will host Northwest Rankin. South Panola defeated Northwest Ranking 34-13 on August 28.
Scoring for the Tigers were Qyendairs Griffin on a 76-yard fumble returned for a touchdown with 8:20 left in the first quarter. The PAT failed.
Donnell Chapman scored on a five yard pass from Lee Self with 1:40 left to go in the first. The two-point pass to Casseell Armstrong was good for the 14-0 lead going into the second quarter.
Domonique Carothers scored on a nine-yard run with 10:25 left in the first half. The PAT by Nolan Parker was good for the 21-0 lead.
Montez Griffin scored on a 15-yard pass from Self with 7:14 left in the half. The PAT gave the Tigers a 28-0 lead.
To end out the scoring in the first half, Parker kicked a 27-yard field goal with four seconds left for the 31-0 lead.
Only one score was logged in the second half. Ledarius Srong scored on a four-yard touchdown run with 3:05 left in the game. With the PAT, the Tigers won 38-0.
The brackets for the 6A playoffs have been set. Clinton, 2-6A #2, will host Southaven, 1-6A, #3. Madison Central, 2-6a #1, will host Starkville, 1-6A #4; and Olive Branch, 1-6A #2, will host Warren Central, 2-6A #3 to close out the north.
In the south, Meridian, 3-6A #1 will host George County, 4-6A #4; Harrison Central, 3-6A #2 will host Oak Grove, 4-6A #3; Ocean Springs, 4-6A #1 will host, 3-6A #4 team Hattiesburg; and 3-6A #2 Natchez will host Petal, 4-6A #3.
