Lady Wave starts hoop action

By Brad Greer

When a team commits 27 turnovers in a basketball game, bad things are bound to happen.

That was the case as the North Delta Lady Green Wave fell 39-31 to Pillow Academy on the second night of the Magnolia Heights Pre-Season girls tournament Tuesday night in Senatobia. The North Delta Junior High girls squad also ended up on the short end of the stick by dropping a 28-22 verdict to the Lady Mustangs prior to the varsity contest.

Holly Ann  Pannell connected on back-to-back three pointers to stake Pillow to a 12-6 first quarter lead. Dasha Tsema scored four of her eight points in the second period as the Lady Mustangs took a 18-12 lead into the locker room.

North Delta (1-1), who played without the services of starting point guard Linsey Hebert and Samantha Massoth, took their only lead of the game at 19-18 by going on a  7-0 run to start the third quarter behind a three-pointer from Sara Waldrip and consecutive baskets by Bradi Beard.

The lead was short-lived however as Pillow retook the lead for good by  going on a  15-2 run  to close out the third quarter. Kaitlin McDaniel spurred  the rally by connecting on three straight jumpers on back-to-back North Delta turnovers.

Pillow (1-0) took its largest lead of the game at 37-21 with 4:46 remaining in the contest. Laci Dubravec kept the Green Wave with striking distance with three straight treys to cut the Mustang lead to 37-31 with 1:18 let but that would be as close as North Delta would get in the game.

Dubravec led all scorers with 14 points including 10 in the fourth quarter. Beard followed with six points, five rebounds, four steals and four assists. Waldrip added five points and pulled down seven rebounds while Katelyn Still chipped in with four points, three tips, three steals and three assists. Lauren Kimzey rounded out the scoring with two points.

Charla Shae Darby and Erin Snider led the Junior High Green Wave with five points each while Julianna Morrow, Hastings Neal and Courtney DuBravec followed with four points each. Madison Atkinson added one point while Callie Blake Masterson dished out four assists.

Both  North Delta  teams will be back in action Saturday morning at Magnolia Heights as the junior high girls will tip-off at 10 am against Marvell, Ark. with the varsity girls following as they also will take on Marvell.
