The North Delta Green Wave softball team closed out a four-game homestand in fine fashion Tuesday with a 15-0 thumping of West Memphis, (Ark.) in a District 1-AA contest. The game was called after three innings due to the 15-run mercy rule.
North Delta, (9-3; 2-0), who played without the services of center fielder Vicki Johnson and first baseman Lauren Kimzey, scored two runs in the first followed by four runs in the second then closed the contest by sending 13 batters to the plate in a nine-run third inning.
The Green Wave took advantage of 12 walks and numerous wild pitches by West Memphis pitching.
Mary Jane Morrow made short work of the Black Knights by retiring all nine batters she faced to pick up the pitching win. The junior right-hander struck out four while throwing only 28 pitches.
Hillari Plummer got things started for the Waves in the bottom of the first with a leadoff single then later scored on a wild pitch.
Linsey Hebert was hit by a pitch then scored the other run on a steal of home plate.
After Morrow drew a leadoff walk to start the second inning, Sara Waldrip slapped a single to right that drove in pinch-runner Grayson Sims from third to give North Delta a 3-0 lead.
Following a Hastings Neal single and a Plummer walk, Hebert laid down a perfectly placed bunt single to score Neal. Hebert then scored the final run of the inning on a RBI groundout by Julianna Morrow.
Samantha Massoth led off the third inning by blasting a triple to right. Five consecutive walks and a single by Hebert produced four runs to stretch the score to 10-0 with no outs.
After Julianna Morrow popped into a double play, the Black Knights looked to be out of the inning but four walks drove in another run and loaded the bases with two outs. Laci Dubravec scored the final run on Waldrip’s fielders’ choice.
Hebert’s two singles and three runs scored paced the Green Wave offensively while Massoth, Dubravec and Sims each scored a pair of runs. Plummer added a single and scored three times for the Lady Waves.
North Delta will return to action Monday at Kirk Academy starting at 5 p.m. then will return home Tuesday to face off against Magnolia Heights also at 5 p.m.
