The South Panola tennis team competed on Thursday, April 16 with the other teams in the district to qualify for the state tournament to be played on May 4 in Jackson.

Advancing through two rounds after getting a first round bye, girl’s doubles Marlee Goforth and Ashley Roberson earned a trip to Jackson with their tennis rackets.

Goforth and Roberson played Horn Lake’s Jefferson and Scott in the first match and won hands down 6-0/6-0.

In the second round, they took on Presley and Franklin from Horn Lake and took care of business quickly with 6-2/6-2 match. To take first place home with them, they won the last match 6-0/6-0.

According to Head Coach Kim Wilson, Goforth and Roberson have been playing together for two years.

“They play well together and have really shown a lot of improvement since last year.

“Overall, I’m pleased with today,” Wilson said. “Our team is inexperienced but they did well today. They just didn’t come out here today and get walked on. They played some great games.”

State tennis championships will be played May 4 and 5.
