Lady Waves dominate in tournament opening day

The North Delta junior high and varsity girls basketball teams opened up the 2008-09 season with a pair of resounding victories Wednesday night in the Green Wave pre-season tournament.

  The junior high Green Wave got things started with a 34-18 thumping of Magnolia Heights. Bradi Beard led all scorers with 14 points. Laci Dubravec followed with nine points while Jordan Pointer added four points and Katelyn Still and Hannah Waldrip each had three and two points.

  In the nightcap, the varsity Green Wave got 17 points from Sara Waldrip as the North Delta defense caused 27 turnovers in route to a 50-18 thumping of Clarksdale Lee. Beard followed with another 14 points while Lauren Kimzey added eight and Dubravec chipped in with six points.

   North Delta shot 19-of-52 from the floor for 36 percent while holding Lee to 7-of-17 shooting overall. Lindsey Herbert contributed with five points.

  The tournament will resume Tuesday  night with the  junior high Green Wave taking the floor against Delta at 6:30 followed by the varsity squaring off against Tunica at 9:00.

  In Wednesday action, the North Delta junior high takes on W. Memphis (Ark.) at 6:30 p.m.
