The North Delta Lady Green Wave opened up their 2019 softball season in exciting fashion as courtesy runner Shelby Boone raced home on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning for the 3-2 victory over Calhoun Academy in its home-opener Thursday.

North Delta (2-2) participated in an Indianola tournament Saturday where they defeated Sharkey-Issaquena Academy 17-5 before losing to Deer Creek 2-0 and Winona Christian 6-4.

With the score deadlocked at 2-2,  North Delta’s Sydney Talley led off the inning with a single in the seventh inning before being lifted on the basepaths for Boone.

After a wild pitch advanced Boone to second, Isabella Morrow laid down a sacrifice bunt to move her to third.

Calhoun starting pitched Keegan Hubbard uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Boone to score the game winner.

Ally Alford picked up the pitching win in relief of starter Paizlee Woods, giving up two runs and striking out three in three innings of work.

Woods surrendered two runs on five hits while walking two batters and fanning one batter over four innings in the circle.

North Delta trailed 2-0 in the fourth before Alford drew a walk to lead off the framed and later scored on Wood’s RBI groundout.

The Lady Wave tied the game in the following inning as Morrow beat out a bunt single, advanced to second on a Gracie Tutor sacrifice bunt, stole third then scored on a wild pitch.

Catcher Morrow also kept the visiting Cougars off the basepaths by throwing out two runners attempting to steal second base.

North Delta was scheduled to open district play last night hosting Kirk Academy before visiting Marshall Academy today at  5 p.m.
