Jessie Edward Daugherty
OXFORD––Jessie Edward Daugherty, 72, died Thursday, January 15, 2015. He was the brother of Fred Daugherty of Sardis.
Services were held Sunday at Dickins Funeral Home. Burial was in Chapel Hill Cemetery. Rev. Albert Beard officiated. Dickins Funeral Home had charge.
Daughtery, born May 1, 1942, to the late Vessie Lee Daugherty and Easter Maybelle Shepard Daugherty, was a member of Courtland Baptist Church.
Fred Ellis
SARDIS––Fred Ellis, 78, died Friday, January 16, 2015, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center.
Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Nelson Chapel M.B. Church in Pope. Pastor Melvin Ellis will officiate. Visitation will be held Friday 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary. Burial will be in Nelson/Pope Chapel Cemetery. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.
Ellis, born July 20, 1936, in Pope, to the late George Ellis and Erma Green, was a custodian for the Ohio School System (South Euclid).
Survivors include: one daughter, Margaret Ellis of Courtland; three sisters, Louise Gathright of L.A., Calif., Earlene Ellis of Pope and Tommie Ellis of Chicago; two brothers, George Ellis of Detroit and C.W. Ellis of Cleveland, Ohio; and one grandchild.
Sandra Kay Gordon
POPE––Sandra Kay Gordon, 66, died Thursday, January 15, 2015, at her residence.
Services were held Monday at Batesville Church of Christ. Robert Rawson and Michael Bates officiated. Burial was in Chapel Hill Cemetery in Pope. Dickins Funeral Home had charge.
Gordon, born Oct. 7, 1948, in Batesville, to the late Kenneth Charles Hentz and Allie Opal Mask Hentz, was a member of Batesville Church of Christ and a homemaker.
Survivors include: her husband, James Robert Gordon of Pope; four daughters, Dawn Prince of Water Valley, Mary Ann Gordon of Pope and Sandra Denise Sissell and Rachael Narvaez, both of Batesville; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Anthony Dewayne Griffin
BATESVILLE––Anthony Dewayne Griffin, 42, died Friday, January 16, 2015.
Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Macedonia M. B. Church in Batesville. Rev. Zannie Leland will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held Saturday 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary, who has charge of arrangements.
Griffin, born July 1, 1972 in Sardis, to M. L. Griffin and Annie Jones Griffin of Batesville, graduated from South Panola High School. He was a member of Macedonia M.B. Church.
Survivors along with his parents include: his wife, LaGreter Govan Griffin of Batesville; four sons, Anthony Curry and Aaron Griffin, both of St. Louis, Gregory Andrews and Patrick House, both of Batesville; two daughters, Keshalynn Govan and Patresia House, both of Batesville; two brothers, Michael Jones and M. L. Griffin Jr., both of Batesville; one sister, Lisa Griffin of Batesville and two grandchildren.
Amos Hulett
BATESVILLE––Amos Hulett, 64, died Sunday, January 18, 2015, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.
Memorial services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary. Visitation will be held Sunday 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary. Burial will be in Batesville Cemetery. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.
Hulett, born June 14, 1950, in Batesville, to the late Turner Stocks and Carrie Bell Hulett, was a fork-lift driver at Georgia Pacific Company.
Survivors include: his wife, Shirley Towns Hulett of Batesville; one son, Amos S. Hulett Jr. of Memphis; one daughter, Tamatha Towns of Batesville; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
James Johnson
MEMPHIS––James Johnson, 66, died Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at the Veteran’s Hospital in Memphis. He was the father of Cedric Johnson and Kedrick Johnson of Como.
Services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Mt. Moriah C.M.E. Church. Pate-Jones Funeral Home in Senatobia has charge.
Survivors along with his sons include: his daughter, Shamone Johnson of Horn Lake; two sisters; and five brothers.
Bobbie Jean Dover Little
COURTLAND––Bobbie Jean Dover Little, 57, died Thursday, January 15, 2015, at her residence.
Services were held Wednesday at Dickins Funeral Home. Hal Johnson officiated.
Little, born July 26, 1957 in Marks, to Bobby L. Dover of Crowder and the late Norma Jean Bonner Beard, was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David Little Jr.
Survivors include: one daughter Tiffiny Henry of Courtland; one son, Darryl T. Smith Jr. of Fernley, Nev.; two sisters, Barbara Beard of Temple, Texas and Melissa Ann Dover of Huffman, Texas; four brothers, Grady Beard Jr., Jerry Dover and Gerald Wayne Beard, all of Pope, Thomas King Jr. of Longtown and seven grandchildren.
Gary Lee Kuykendall
COOKEVILLE, Tenn.––Gary Lee Kuykendall, 49, died Friday, January 16, 2015, at Cookeville Regional Hospital.
Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant M.B. Church in Enid. Randy Kuykendall will officiate. Visitation will be held Friday from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary.
Kuykendall, born March 10, 1965, in Tallahatchie County, to the late Marvin Bass and Irene Kuykendall, was a truck driver at Freight Line Trucking Company. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Livington, Tenn.
Survivors include: his wife, Lindsey Kuykendall of Cookeville; one son, Xavier Kuykendall of Cookeville.; three daughters, Andrea House of Senatobia, Chelsea Kuykendall of Mobile, Ala. and Crystal Swearenger of Batesville; three sisters, Brunelle Brooks of Enid, Diane Kuykendall and Audra Kuykendall of Charleston; and one brother Randy Kuykendall of Daytona Beach.
Robert Lee Ramsey
Robert Lee Ramsey, 73, died Wednesday, January 14, 2015, at North Delta Hospice Center in Southaven.
Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Independent Tyro M.B. Church in Senatobia. Rev. Wilson Ramsey will officiate. Visitation will be held today noon – 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lewers Chapel Cemetery. Kenneth I. Roberson Funeral Home of Batesville has charge.
Born to the late George Ramsey Sr. and Maggie Robinson Ramsey, he was a member of Lewers Chapel C.M.E. Church.
Survivors include: sisters, Inez Ramsey of Como and Onnie Jackson of Senatobia and four brothers, George E. Ramsey, W.L. Ramsey and Booker T. Ramsey, all of Como and Jessie Ramsey of Senatobia.
Cecil O. Sharp
BATESVILLE––Cecil O. Sharp, 85, died Friday, January 16, 2015, at his residence.
Services were held Tuesday, January 20 at First Baptist Church in Batesville. Burial was in Forrest Memorial Park. Dr. Tommy Snyder and Jud Allen officiated.
Sharp, born Oct. 18, 1929, in Itta Bena, to the late Oliver G. and Dorothy D. Locke Sharp, graduated from Crowder High School. He attend Delta State Teachers College and earned a Bachelors of Science in Biology. He also received a degree from the University of Mississippi. He served his country in the Korean War was as a member of the U.S. Air Force.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Batesville. He served as the Chairman of Deacons for First Baptist Church in Marks. He also served as a Deacon for Oakhurst Baptist Church in Clarksdale as well as First Baptist in Batesville. After his service in the military, he worked as as a salesman with Delta Uniform Company in Marks and was the personnel director with the Northern District of the Mississippi Highway Department. He taught science at Lambert, Sledge and Marks Schools and went on to be the Superintendent of Education for Quitman County Schools.
Once he retired from his career in education, he was the owner-operator of Sunflower Food Store in Marks, and along with his wife, Bonnie, was the owner of the Pacesetter Shops in Marks and Batesville.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Bonnie Sharp and one son, Marty Sharp.
Survivors include his son Kevin V. Sharp of Batesville; three grandchildren, Tyler (Elisa) Sharp, Blake Sharp, all of Batesville and Jordan Sharp of Dundee, one sister, Inez McCullar of Courtland.
John I. Woods
BATESVILLE––John “Johnny” I. Woods, 66, died Tuesday, January 20, 2014, at Tri-Lakes Medical Center.
Services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home. Rev. Johnny Tullos will officiate. Visitation will be held today 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home, who has charge of arrangements. Burial will be in Forrest Memorial Park.
Woods, born Jan. 4, 1949 in Quitman County, to the late Henry Woods and Ella Jones Woods, worked as a mechanic and restored tractors.
He was preceded in death by his son, John Woods.
Survivors include: his wife, Linda Faye Weaver Woods of Batesville; one daughter, Johnnie Renea Smith of Batesville; two sisters, Lena Davis of Jena, La. and Virginia Culbreath of Wills Point, Texas; one brother, Henry “H.O.” Woods of Jackson; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
