Valenicia “Kay” Cooper


SARDIS – Valenicia “Kay” Cooper, 45, died Friday, November 16, 2012, at her residence.

Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary Chapel. Pastor Vernarda Sandridge will officiate. Burial will be in Shiloh C.M.E. Cemetery in Sardis. Visitation will be Friday from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.

Cooper, born Jan. 26, 1967, in Sardis, to Robert Earl Cooper and Cora Deloney Cooper, was a member of Shiloh C.M.E. Church in Sardis.

Survivors include: her mother, Cora Cooper of Sardis; three sisters, Frances Lucas and Vanessa Jefferson, both of Olive Branch and Roselyn Cooper of Milwaukee and one brother, Kenny Cooper, also of Milwaukee.

Dorothy Ann Crump

SARDIS – Dorothy Ann Crump, 54, died Friday, November 16. 2012 at Baptist Memorial Hospital – Desoto.

Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary Chapel. Rev. T.A. Lawrence will officiate. Burial will be in Persimmon Hill Cemetery in Enid. Visitation will be held Friday from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary. Cooley’s Mortuary has charge.

Crump, born May 9, 1958, in Charleston, to Beatrice Edwards Crump of Sardis and the late Green H. Moore, was a retired factory worker and a member of Persimmon Hill M.B. Church.

Survivors along with her mother include: one son, Anthony C. Crump of Batesville; one daughter, Jasmine Crump of Batesville; five sisters, Mary Crump, Jackie Elzy, Faye Moore and Patsy Moore, all of Chicago and Edith Marie Gates of Milwaukee; seven brothers, Lee Andrew Crump Jr. of Sardis, Wallace Crump of Courtland, Lee Crump of Lamiranda, Calif., Robert Earl Moore of Chicago, Micheal Crump of Sardis, Earnest Moore of Memphis and Don Moore of Milwaukee and one grandchild.

Rena Gertrude Hutchings

BATESVILLE – Rena Gertrude Hutchings, 84, died Sunday, November 11, 2012, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis.

Services were held Thursday at Holly Springs Funeral Home. Burial will was in Early Grove in Lamar. Frank Feathers and Christopher Norwood officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home had charge.
Hutchings, born Aug.  30, 1928, to the late George Edward Feathers and Mary Yeager Feathers, was a Baptist and a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Hutchings; one son, Arthur Hutchings and two daughters, Brenda Morgan and Rena Hutchings and three grandchildren, Margaret Rena Hutchings, Latisha Hutchings McCrite and Frances Renee Gentry.

Survivors include: one son, George Leslie Hutchings of Batesville; four daughters, Ada Jane McGuff of Holcomb, Linda Norwood of Holly Springs, Mildred Gore of Greenwood and Joyce Kiddy of Batesville; one sister, Gladys Smith of Waterford; 18 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Matilda P. Johnson

COMO – Matilda P. Johnson, 75, died Thursday, November 15, 2012, at her residence.

Services will be held Saturday at noon at Cherry Street M.B. Church in Como. Burial will be in Liberty Hill Cemetery. Felix Cauthen Funeral Home has charge.

Johnson was a member of Cherry Street M.B. Church where she was on the Mother Board, Usher Board, Kitchen Committee and was the Pastor’s Aid president.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Johnson Jr.

Survivors include: four daughters, Lizzie Price, Sadie Mabry, Effie Jones and Annie Young, all of Como; two sons, Joe Pratcher and Matt Young III, both of Como; three sisters, Ethel Mae Gross and Sadie Mae Black, both of Sardis and Jessie Mae Young of Como; two brothers, Andy Farmer and Izear Farmer, both of Como; 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Harvey Lowery

KOSCIUSKO – Harvey Lowery, 69, died Monday November 19, 2012, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Missisisppi.

There is no memorial service set at this time. Wells Funeral Home has charge.
Lowery, born Nov. 16, 1943 in Winona to Henry Clay and Thelma Louise Vance Lowery, was a self employed entrepreneur.

 Survivors include: his wife, Bernice Lowery of Kosciusko; one daughter Felicia L. Martin of Kosciusko; and five grandchildren.

Kathryn “Kay” McDuffie

Nettleton – Kathryn “Kay” McDuffie,  music teacher at Batesville Intermediate School, died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012 at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo after a battle with cancer.

The Nettleton native was a longtime music educator and activist in the cultural and musical history of Mississippi and devoted Ole Miss alumnus. Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 23, at the Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors, 5281 Cliff Gookin Blvd, Tupelo, with private burial in the McDuffie Family Plot at Nettleton Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time on Friday at Holland-Tupelo Chapel.

Norma Lou Redd


SARDIS – Norma Lou Redd, 64, died November 14, 2012, at Baptist Memorials Hospital in Memphis.

Services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Pate-Jones Funeral Home in Senatobia. Burial was in Surrette Cemetery in Arkabutla. Pate-Jones Funeral Home has charge.

Survivors include: her husband, Lavern Redd of Sardis; one daughter, Donna Redd of Sardis; one son, Ricky Redd of Batesville; sisters, Priscilla Sparks of Sardis, May Madena of Sardis, Liz Leonard of Crenshaw and Ann Moore of Gulfport; brothers, Charles Lane of Savage and Whim O’Neal of Sardis; 10 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

The family requests that memorials be made to the donor’s choice.

Arthur Louis Shaw

MEMPHIS – Arthur Louis Shaw, 87, formerly of Batesville, died Sunday, November 18, 2012.

Services will be held Saturday at noon at Pentecostal Temple Church of God in Christ, 229 Danny Thomas Blvd. in Memphis. Visitation will be held Friday from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. at M.J. Edwards Whitehaven Chapel on Elvis Presley Blvd. MJ Edwards Funeral Home has charge.

Shaw, born May 9, 1925, in St. Louis, to the late Easter Rudd Gleaton and Antonio Shaw, was formerly employed at Smith Cleaners and Elise’s Flowers.

Survivors include: his cousin, Rev. Zannie Leland; one nephew, Calvin Herring of Memphis and one niece, Doris Herring of Memphis.
