Forecast: snow and sleet, ice east of us

By Billy Davis

Panola County and North Mississippi were set to receive a mix of sleet and snow through Friday night, Panola EMA director Daniel Cole said late Thursday.

The county is expected to miss a chance for ice to accumulate, though the Tupelo area is expected to see up to a quarter-inch of ice. The sleet/snow mix is expected to change to freezing rain in northwest Mississippi, according to the National Weather Service.

“The ice is supposed to be south of us and southeast of us,” Cole reported.

The sleet/snow mix that was enveloping Panola County late Thursday is expected to stretch from Jackson, Tenn. south to Grenada, Miss.

The Mid-South is experiencing below-normal temperatures that are expected to rise above freezing during the day Friday, according to the Weather Service.

Nighttime temperatures are expected to rise above freezing by Sunday then dip into the 20s Monday and Tuesday, when another arctic surge will move into the region.
