MOBILE, ALA – This week South Panola quarterback Rickey Wright and defensive lineman Tijah Wright joined 34 of the state’s best football players for the 16th annual Alabama/Mississippi All-Star Football Classic.
The game will be played Saturday, June 7, at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Ala. at 7 p.m.
Though Ricky Wright has mostly seen offensive action, tomorrow night he will play in a defensive back position. Wright did see some limited action on the defense while at South Panola.
The Mississippi and Alabama players have been in Mobile all week practicing. Through daily website reports from The Mobile Register, www.al.com, both teams have had some players get hurt and some succumb to heat exhaustion.
The Mississippi team will be led by quarterbacks Omarr Conner of Noxubee County and Akeem Lofton of Wayne County, described as "two of the more exciting high school quarterbacks."
Alabama leads the series 10-5, including a four-game winning streak.
Head coach of the Mississippi team is Tony Stanford of Louisville.
This week’s all-star game includes a host of Division I signees, including seven players who signed with Alabama, five bound for Auburn, nine going to Mississippi State, six who chose Ole Miss, seven going to Southern Miss and one each who signed with LSU, Florida, Nebraska and Notre Dame.
FOX Sports Net will again carry the Classic this year, with Dave Neal handling the play-by-play duties, former Auburn coach Doug Barfield serving as color commentator and WKRG sportscaster Randy Patrick working as the sideline reporter. The game will be telecast on FOX’s Sports Net South, reaching more than 9.2 million homes throughout the Southeast.
