Sheriff’s Report

All units responded to a shooting on Heffner Road on Tuesday, September 13 at approximately 12:36 a.m.  Deputies arrived on the scene to find the resident outside the home in the front yard. According to the report, the resident stated the victim was inside the residence.
“I observed the front door open and a shotgun propped up on the right side of the doorway with a shell jammed in the ejection port. I observed the victim laying on the couch slumped over on his left side with a pool of blood on the pillow beside him,” Deputy Emily Griffin stated in her report. Deputy Maurice Market checked for a pulse but was unable to find one.
Deputies cleared the scene and noticed a locked door. Deputy Griffin asked the resident about the locked door to which the resident replied it was his bedroom door and handed over the key.
According to the report, a handgun was found on the kitchen table. Deputy Griffin observed a hole in the ceiling and a shot gun shell laying on the floor along with other small brass casings leading up to the victim. According to the report, it appeared as if the victim was shot in his right cheek near his mouth and twice in his right shoulder.
“I observed several contusions and lacerations on the resident’s face as well as blood on his face and clothing,” stated Deputy Griffin.
According to the report, the resident stated he and the victim got into a fight over a vehicle and the victim brandished the shotgun. The resident said the shotgun went off while they were struggling over it and that he then got his handgun from his bedroom and shot the victim.
The incident is under further investigation.
The Panola County Sheriff’s office received 36 calls which required service from Panola County deputies from September 5 to September 16.
September 5
• Deputy Josh Griffin spoke to a Boyd Street resident who stated he was receiving threatening text messages from someone who wanted to fight him.
September 7
• Investigator Jason Chrestman notified Deputy Britton Crawford of a silver GMC SUV that was seen on Sardis Lake Drive in possession of a stolen coke machine Deputy Crawford located the GMC at the intersection of Highway 6 East and Black Jack Road. According to the report, the subject stated the coke machine was not stolen. The subject was arrested and transported to the Panola County Sheriff’s Department.
September 8
• Cedar Drive resident reported to Deputy Market his ex-wife came onto his property trying to start a fight. According to the report, the resident asked the suspect to leave several times but she refused. The resident said the suspect began hitting his car and threatening to do bodily harm to him and his grandmother.
September 9
• Sherwood Place resident spoke to Deputy Bill Furniss regarding a simple assault that occurred at Wallace Creek Campground September 3. According to the report, the resident stated she was at the campground when her friend’s ex-wife drove up to them and jumped out of her car and then pushed the resident to the ground and threatened her. The resident stated she was afraid due to the previous threats the subject had made. The resident filed simple assault charges against the subject.
• Lieutenant Willie Harris responded to Highway 35 South where the resident said his ex-wife was taking items from the residence. According to the report, he said the subject took everything including his clothes and he just wants his belongings back.
• Alabama resident spoke to Deputy Chuck Tucker and stated she contracted some timber to be cut from a Charleston location. According to the resident, the suspects did not pay her what her timber was worth. The resident also stated the suspects cut timber after the contract expired.
September 10
• Deputy Bobby Billingsley spoke to a Ruby Road, Courtland resident at Merit Health Emergency room. The resident stated she and the suspect were standing in the road arguing when she pushed the subject. The resident continued to state the suspect head butted her and she left to go to the ER. According to the report, the resident needed nine stitches. No charges were filed.
• Pocahontas Street, Sardis resident reported to Deputy Jeremy Hailey that the property he rented out was burglarized. According to the report, the renter had recently passed and family members went to the home to check on her things and noticed the home had been broken into. According to the report, no damages were caused to the home and it was unknown if anything was missing.
• McMinn Road resident reported an individual stole money out of her grandmother’s wallet. According to the report, the suspects took approximately $300 from the resident’s wallet.
September 11
• Investigator Smith spoke to a resident on Quitman County Line Road who located a six-foot trailer parked behind his house that contained two ac units, stove, and some cabinets. Further investigation revealed the property was reported stolen from Quitman County the day before. The incident is under further investigation.
• Deputy Darryl House responded to a breaking and entering on Eureka Road. According to the report, the suspect pried open the front door and kicked down a bedroom door and stole $100 in cash.
• Deputy House investigated an incident on Forrest Drive in Sardis where the resident stated she was assaulted by her boyfriend at his residence on Central Academy Road.
• Cotton Plant Road resident reported someone broke out the windows, windshield and headlights to his red Ford dump truck on Woodruff Road.
• Deputy Hailey and Deputy Josh Griffin were conducting a license check point at the corner of File Road and County Road when Deputy Hailey observed the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. According to the report, Deputy Griffin observed the passenger throwing a marijuana roach out of the window. The driver was asked to step out of the vehicle while a search was conducted. According to the report, Deputy Griffin located a one-hitter pipe and a scale in the cup holder and a large pack of marijuana in the glove box. The driver was arrested and transported to the Panola County Sheriff’s office.
• Oak View Road, Como resident  stated she went next door to feed her neighbor’s dogs when a German shepherd came at her. Another resident stated he has seen the dog in his front yard and fired a shot in the air to scare the dog off. The owner of the dog stated she was painting her front door and the dog got out.
September 12
• Highway 315, Sardis resident reported her wallet was stolen out of her purse while she was at North Delta school on September 9.
September 13
• Holmes Road resident reported to Deputy Crawford her ex-husband became hostile after a conversation about child support and began making threats towards her over email and facebook.
• Deputy George Renfroe spoke to an Old Panola Road, Sardis resident who stated an unknown person came onto his property and stole a 16-foot tandem axel trailer.
• Miller Street resident reported a breaking and entering to Deputy Crawford. “I pulled into the drive to move a tv for my papaw and when I got inside I noticed everything had been ransacked including all the closets and drawers,” stated the resident.
• Deputy Still investigated a burglary on Old Panola Circle, Como where the resident stated someone took a tire iron from his back porch and pried the back door open. According to the report, nothing was missing from the home.
September 14
• Deputy Steven McLarty responded to Lake Breeze Drive for a stolen four-wheeler. The resident stated the green Honda four-wheeler that was parked in her driveway was missing. According to the report, the four-wheeler was later found on the side of the road on Anderson Road and was returned to the owner.
• Investigator Danny Beavers responded to a burglary on Avery Road, Courtland where the resident stated he was missing approximately $185 worth of property from his shop.
• Sanders Road, Sardis resident reported to Deputy Hailey his .20 gauge shotgun, valued at approximately $400, was stolen from his truck.
• Deputy Furniss responded to a burlary on Atkins Street, Sardis. The resident stated the suspect was seen taking parts from her 2002 Tahoe. According to the report, the resident’s brother was coming to pick up the vehicle to repair damages from a previous accident. The suspect stated he would bring the parts back. The resident stated she wishes to file charges. According to the report, the resident received her speakers and window, but not the car battery.
• Chickasaw Road, Pope resident reported to Deputy Tucker her son has anger issues and if he does not get what he wants he will start breaking things. According to the report, the resident stated her son wanted money and when she refused, he threw a small tool box and broke the glass out of the front door.
• Deputy McLarty responded to Lucious Taylor Road where the resident was cursing and causing a disturbance. According to the report, Deputy McLarty could smell a strong smell of intoxicating beverage coming from the resident and his speech was slurred. The resident was arrested and charged with public drunk.
September 16
• Investigator Terry smith responded to a fire on Shell Road. According to the report, initial investigation revealed that the power had been cut off to the house for non-payment and the resident was using a candle for light when it started a fire.
The brother, who is also the neighbor, reportedly began to cause a disturbance with fire personnel by wanting them to let the house burn and made statements that he was going to finish burning it down.
Investigator Smith advised him that at a later date, if he wanted to finish leveling the family home-place, he would need to contact the fire department. According to the report, there is no insurance on the home and no attempt to burn the home for financial gain.
• Deputy Harold Lewis responded to Camille Road, Sardis for a report of stolen items. Deputy Lewis spoke with a Forrest Drive resident who stated she furnished the home with furniture for her son, who no longer lives there, but another one of her sons moved in. According to the report, the resident stated her son stole an air conditioner and a dinette set with six chairs from the home.

• Car lost control on Eureka Road. An injury was reported.
• A two-car accident occurred on private property near Pope School.
September 11
• Car had a blow-out and overturned on Dummyline Road. An injury was reported.
September 12
• A car wrecked trying not to hit a dog on Pope Water-Valley Road.
September 15
• Two cars collided on Carlisle Road.
September 9
A 13 year-old juvenile got into a bind for disorderly conduct at Pope School.
