We were pleased and rightfully so last November when C Spire announced that Batesville had been selected as one of nine cities from among 33 applicants to qualify for installation of ultra-high-speed fiber optic internet.

The Mississippi telecommunications and media provider had challenged the state to accept its innovative effort to provide 1 Gbps internet speed to homes in small cities.  The speed is presently only available in a few metropolitan cities. City leaders saw the potential and jumped onboard to create the response that led to Batesville’s selection by C Spire.

They understood that ultra-high-speed internet is the infrastructure of the future. Along with pipes and water and electricity and streets, ultra high speed internet will be essential to attract and retain business and the creativity that drives it. We went after it and got selected, then our energy waned.

It didn’t help that this long disagreeable winter made neighborhood canvassing something most of us found disagreeable.
