Ronnie Hinton of Delta Street Rods, appearing before Batesville aldermen Tuesday, described plans for a fall car show on the Square.

 Hinton had been asked to appear before the board after he requested permission to hold the show. He announced a date of October 2.

“A lot of towns in the state have a festival of some type and the car show is attached to it,” he said.

The Delta Street Rods held a pair of events in Sardis during 2009 that were well attended, according to Hinton.

“We have been wanting to get into Batesville, and we are really ready to give it a shot,” he said. “We want this to be something that will be a benefit for the city and us as a club.”

Hinton said this show could draw anywhere from 50-150 classic cars.

“The first show we had in Sardis we thought we’d be lucky to get 75 cars, and we ended up with nearly 140,” he said. “So you really don’t know. It’s going to depend on the weather and a lot of other factors.”

Mayor Jerry Autrey asked Hinton to schedule a meeting with Batesville Main Street Manager Colleen Clark.

“She is the one that coordinates what goes on around the Square, and I think you should work with her to get this lined up,” Autrey said.

Hinton said this area was devoid of big car shows, and establishing one in Batesville was a good move.

“If we get this scheduled and we can make this an annual event, you will see it really grow,” he said. “Most of the participants plan out their year early, but if we can keep this annually, it will get bigger and better.”

Ward 3 Alderman Stan Harrison asked about the possibility of incorporating live music into the event.

“I know you guys have your D.J., but what if we got a live band to play in the afternoon?” Harrison asked.

Harrison and other aldermen said they would discuss adding a band to the event during future meetings.

In other board business:

•Aldermen opened bids for a city owned house at 111 Hoskins Rd. Bids were taken under advisement. The apparent high bidder was Brad Baker at $15,500.

•Aldermen voted to disburse budgeted funds to Panola Partnership.

•Anthony Toliver was terminated from his position with the Street Department following an executive session.
