Crenshaw Police Chief Eddie Matthews resigned his position over the weekend, the town’s mayor reported Monday.

Matthews, a former sheriff’s deputy, was hired in August when Mayor Oscar Barlow took office.

Matthews had moved to Crenshaw to take the job, which had been turned into a full-time position.

The mayor and board of aldermen will discuss the job opening when they meet Thursday night for the regular monthly board meeting, Barlow also said.

Adequate law enforcement has been a lingering issue in Crenshaw, where the cash-strapped town has struggled to equip its police department with gear and adequate patrol cars.

Matthews was hired after aldermen terminated the town’s former police chief, Darryl Linzy, in June.
