In a game that was more suited for ducks, the North Delta Green Wave picked up its second district win of the season by sloshing its way past homestanding West Memphis, Ark. 40-6 on a cold, wet, windy Friday night.

As expected, North Delta dominated the game from start to finish as the Green Wave registered 214 yards of offense while holding an out-manned Black Knight squad  to four first downs and  95  yards of total offense, nine  of which came in the first half. West Memphis picked up their initial first down with 1:21 remaining in the third quarter.

North Delta (6-2; 2-1) took a 2-0 lead with 7:11 left in the first quarter when West Memphis snapped the ball out of the endzone on a attempted punt. The Green Wave scored on its next possession as Tres Brasell  scored  the first of his three touchdowns on the night with a five-yard scoring run then added the two-point conversion to make the score 10-0 at the 4:54 mark.

Brasell finished the evening with 65 yards on 12 carries. Amazingly, neither team turned the ball over in a game that was played in a misting rain with 25 to 30 mile-per-hour wind.

“We went into the game tonight making sure that we protected the football and with conditions the way they were it was tough. But who knows, we might have to play in this kind of weather again later on down the road,“ said North Delta head coach Dan Werner.

The Green Wave increased   the lead to 18-0 when quarterback Derrick Shawn hit a wide-open Bryan Nickle on a 23-yard touchdown pass with 1:27 remaining in the first quarter. Shawn then hooked up with Chris Reeves to complete the successful two-point attempt.

North Delta’s special teams got into the act midway through the second quarter when Jeremiah Watson blocked a West Memphis punt on the Black Knight 19-yard line. Three plays later, Brasell crashed in from three yards out then added the two-point conversion for a 26-0 North Delta lead. Brasell added his last touchdown on a six-yard run with 1:25 left before intermission for a 32-0 halftime lead.

North Delta’s second unit offense closed out scoring in the third quarter as backup signal-caller Kasey Livingston connected with John Cody Dalrymple  on a 50-yard scoring strike. Chris Rodgers ran the two-point conversion for a 40-0 lead. West Memphis avoided the shutout  as Drake Holt scored on a five-yard run. The second half  was played with a 12-minute running clock.

“The thing I was most pleased with is they (West Memphis) put everybody in the box so we had to throw it and when we did we completed a few passes so we worked on our passing game too,” said Werner.

Things did not all go well for the Green Wave on the night as  offensive lineman Bill Gurley left in the first quarter with a knee injury.

North Delta finished the night with 137 yards rushing as Michael Magee  added three rushes for 34 yards while Shawn followed with 17 yards on four carries to go along with 27 yards passing. Rodgers chipped in with 14 yards on six carries while Nickle had one carry for seven yards. Nickle also hauled in a pair of receptions for 27 yards.

After a open date this Friday, their second of the year, the Green Wave will celebrate homecoming next Friday as they host Greenville Christian in a 7:30 kickoff.
