The South Panola Tigers defeated the Northwest Rankin Cougars 34-13 Friday night in Flowood.

It was a highly contested matchup where the score was tied at six in the second quarter when both teams failed to convert their extra points.

Nick Brassell got the Tigers on the boards first with a 27-yard reception from quarterback Lee Self for the 6-0 lead as the PAT was blocked.

Cody Defoore tied the score on a 53-yard run, but the two-point conversion failed.

Later in the second quarter, Tiger running back Domonique Carothers scores on a 20-yard run and Nick Parker scores on a seven-yard run. With the PATs, the Tigers led 20-6.

Northwest Rankin’s Kevin Cooper intercepted a Lee Self pass and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown to cut the lead 20-13 at the half.

The second half scoring was all the Tigers as new quarterback Kendrick Market scored on a five-yard run in the third quarter for the 26-13 lead.

In the fourth, Carothers scores his second touchdown of the night on a four-yard run.

Carothers was the leading rusher with 130 yards on 17 carries, followed by Parker with 112 yards on 18 carries.

Self completed nine of 19 passes for 130 yards, one touchdown, one interception and one sack.

Brassell had five receptions for 80 yards and one touchdown.

The Tigers had a total offense of 419 yards, 20 first downs, and eight penalities for 63 yards. The Cougars had 106 total yards and four first downs.

It was slow go in the first half, but the North Panola Cougars pulled it together and walked away with a 34-6 win over the John F. Kennedy Hornets of Mound Bayou.

The game was scoreless after the first quarter.

Then wide receiver Ricky Hunts scored on a beautiful 32-yard pass from quarterback Quinn Ellis to put the Cougars on the boards with 6:45 left in the first half. The PAT failed and the Cougars led 6-0.

Kennedy took 12 plays to march the ball 52-yards down the field and scored on a one-yard run with 2:31 left in the half to tie the score at six. The two-point conversion failed and the teams were tied at halftime.

After a pointed conversation from head coach Clifton Davis Jr. at halftime, the Cougars came out a different team and scored 14 points in the third quarter. After back-to-back fumbles by the Hornets, Ellis scored on a two-yard run with 5:23 left in the quarter. The two-point conversion run was good by Darius Loveberry. Then on a 13-yard pass from Ellis to Hunt, the Cougars took a 20-6 lead. The PAT failed.

The Cougars scored two more runs in the fourth quarter. The first occurred with 11:15 left in the game on a Vernon Lewis six-yard run. The two-point conversion failed.

The last touchdown was on first and 10 after a fumble recovery. Lewis scored on a 24 yard run with 5:41 left in the game.

Tres Brasell had 25 carries, 208 yards and a touchdown to lead the North Delta Green Wave to a 33-12 victory over Tunica Academy. Chris Rodgers entered the game in the fourth quarter and had eight carries for 100 yards and two touchdowns.

Brasell got the Green Wave on the boards first in the first quarter with a six-yard run. The kick was blocked for the 6-0 lead.

In the second quarter, Corbin Baker scored on a 20-yard pass reception from quarterback Derek Shawn. Brasell scored the two-point conversion for the 214-0 halftime lead.

Chris Reeves scored the lone touchdown in the third quarter on a 15-yard pass from Shawn. Bill Gurley’s PAT was good for the 21-0 lead.

Rodgers scored on a 13-yard run. The PAT failed for the 27-0 lead.

Tunica scored on a seven-yard pass to avoid the shutout, but the kick was blocked and the score stood 27-6.

Rodgers scored the last Green Wave touchdown with a 16-yard run. The PAT failed with 34 seconds left in the game.

Tunica scored its second touchdown, a 31-yard pass, as time expired in the game and did not attempt the extra point.
