The South Panola Tiger baseball team had little trouble against Byhalia in a makeup game Monday winning 14-2, but Oxford was a different story Tuesday night.

The Tigers fell to 7-4 on the season after falling to the Chargers 7-4 in non-conference action.

Against Byhalia, Whit Whitten (3-0) got the win pitching while Andrew Brown took the loss for the Indians. Ethan Bright got the save pitching one inning.

Whitten struck out five batters, allowed three hits and two walks.

Bright struck out two and allowed no walks or hits.

The Tigers’ biggest inning was the second when they scored eight runs. They scored five runs in the third inning and finished off the evening with one run in the fourth.

Hitting for the Tigers were Tyler Benson 3-for-3 with a triple and one RBI; Joseph Blair, 1-for-4 with one RBI; Bright, 2-for-3 with a double; David Renfroe, 2-for-4, two triples, two RBIs; Wesley Gregg, 3-for-3, one RBI; Monroe Harrison, 1-for-2; Zach Horne, 1-for-1, one RBI; and Lee Self, 1-for-1.

Renfroe was on the mound and took the loss against Oxford (10-1), the No. 4 ranked team in the state. Matt Shaw got the win for the Chargers.

The Chargers went ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning, but the Tigers rallied to take a 4-2 lead in the top of the fourth inning.

“We had a good inning, but they kept chipping away at it,” said Tiger head coach Patrick Robey.

Robey said the team was flat entering the game and said that was partly his fault.

“Oxford is a lot better than we gave them credit for,” Robey said. “They were more aggressive at the plate, more agressive in the field. We made mistakes defensively.”

The Tigers played Desoto Central at Ole Miss last night. He said the team was excited to play on the Rebel field.

“Ole Miss likes to do this and get other teams on the field to play,” Robey said.

The Tigers will play Columbus in district action on the road Tuesday at 5 and 7 p.m. beginning with the junior varsity game.
