North Delta wins over Kirk with four-run sixth inning

By Will Dickins
The North Delta baseball team traveled to Grenada Tuesday night to face the Kirk Academy Raiders in district action and secured a 6-2 win.
The game was grid-locked at 0-0 for the first four innings.  Both teams were struggling to hit with North Delta being hitless until Hunter Houston hit a single in the top of the fourth inning.  Houston started on the mound keeping the Raiders at bay.  He had four strikeouts, one run, and two hits against him in four innings of work.
North Delta left six men on base with half of them being in scoring position.  Each time they had a man in scoring position with under two outs, the Green Wave could not take advantage of opportunities to score.
As the defensive affair continued, Kirk Academy finally pushed through with one run in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Luke Noah came into a tricky situation with bases loaded and no outs.  He only allowed one run while striking out three batters.
Now with a wake up call, North Delta answered.  They were down one but had been close to breaking it open for most of the game.  They finally did just that scoring four runs in the top of the sixth inning to put the pressure back on Kirk Academy.
The Green Wave had a runner in scoring position once again. Zach Adams came up to the plate knowing what he had to do.  This time Adams delivered a shot back up the middle for an RBI single to score Jones Montgomery from second base.  This only put blood in the water and provided momentum for the rest of the team.  Noah entered the box later with bases loaded and one out.
Ting!
The ball flies to right field where the fielder misses the ball causing two runners to score and Noah to get to second base.  The score was now 3-1. Cole Devazier stepped up to plate for his share.  He took the second pitch of the at bat back up the middle for an RBI single to lengthen the lead even more.  It was now 4-1.
Noah sat Kirk Academy down in order in the bottom half using only five pitches.  To ignite the fire even more, the final two outs came on a 5-4-3 double play to send the Green Wave sprinting to the dugout for another chance to score.
They would add two more in the seventh inning.  One came on another RBI from Devazier with bases loaded when he scored Adams from third base.  The other run came on a gift in the form of a wild pitch past the catcher scoring Houston to make it 6-1.
All North Delta had to do was get three more outs.  They did do that while allowing one run to make the final score 6-2 North Delta.  After earning this win, the Green Wave hopes to use this as a springboard into the final two weeks of the season.  They have a makeup game with Saint Joseph Monday before hosting another game Thursday against Lee Academy.
