Man in custody after shooting

By Rupert Howell
The District Attorneys’ office is presently mum about a suspect in the death of Marcus Lee last Thursday afternoon but a man arrested shortly afterward is no stranger to local law enforcement. Charges yet to be filed in the shooting, contrary to earlier reports.
Batesville police confirmed last week that a suspect, Keldrick Henderson, was being held on previous charges of burglary and trespass. Henderson remains in custody. Police referred all questions to the district attorney’s office.
District Attorney John Champion and Asst. DA Jay Hale said Monday that they could not name Henderson as a suspect and also said they were awaiting reports from the crime lab before going forward with naming suspects unless witnesses come forward.
“There were no witnesses,” according to Champion, who told this reporter, “If you have one, please let me know.”
Meanwhile social media is abuzz with information concerning the incident and Memphis news has reported Henderson as a suspect who was taken into custody following a brief search, a statement also confirmed by local police who asked for assistance in spreading the word that the suspect had been apprehended.
Henderson was a no-show the prior day in City of Batesville Municipal Court where he was faced charges of possession of a stolen firearm according to The Panolian records.
Lee was shot multiple times in front of Panola First Stop on Panola Ave. early Thursday afternoon.
Panolian records indicate Henderson bonded out of jail in January when he had been bound over to Panola County Grand Jury for burglary, petit larceny, aggravated assault and concealed weapon.
In October of 2014 Henderson was arrested and charged with possession with intent. As early as November 2014 Henderson was arrested and charged on a child support lock up order and possession of a firearm.
In November 2009 an assault by threat charge was dismissed in Batesville City Court when the affiant failed to appear.
Funeral services for Lee are Saturday at 2 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary.
