Walkathon Sat. for St. Jude

By Rita Howell
It began as a “thank you” to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for their treatment of her child. But now, four years later, Ruby Fowler’s labor of love has grown to include teams and individuals who will join her at Trussell Park Saturday morning for the annual St. Jude Walkathon.
Athletic teams from South Panola High School, AFJROTC cadets, families of current and former St. Jude patients, civic clubs and interested individuals are planning to participate in the 10 a.m. walk, bringing with them donations for the hospital.
Registration starts at 9 a.m. There is no fee.
There will be activities for children, refreshments, and an appearance by pirate Captain Jack Sparrow.
“Anyone can come out and enjoy the festivities,” Fowler said.
Over the past four years the event has raised more than $19,000 for St. Jude, Fowler said.
Her son, Cody Golden, now 20, was treated for leukemia at St. Jude in 2012. He is in remission now and his mother is grateful for the care Cody received and for the fact that hospital never charges for treatment.
Anyone may make a donation by bringing it to the event or mailing checks made to St. Jude to: Ruby Fowler, 644 Barron Rd., Lambert, MS 38643.
