Como board approves demolition burning of abandoned structure

By John Howell
Como Fire Chief Randy Perkins asked town officials for permission for the fire department to burn a structure at 219 Cherry Street.
The abandoned house is owned by a church that wants to have the structure demolished.
“They’ve approached us about burning it,” Perkins said.
The fire chief said the demolition burning gives volunteer firefighters the opportunity for realistic training.
“Usually in a situation like this in town I leave it up to the town to decide whether they will let me do it or not. We’ll be glad to burn it for them in a training session,” he said.
Mayor Everette Hill told Perkins to go ahead with the demolition burning pending an okay from board attorney Revonda Griffin.
The fire chief also reported that four Como volunteers were enrolled in a class to become certified as Emergency Medical Responders (EMR). Perkins’ monthly report that volunteers had answered 16 calls during July include eight calls for medical assistance.
In another matter approved by Como aldermen Tuesday night, Charles Woolfolk will open “Daydream Studios” at 209B Main Street. Woolfolk told the mayor and aldermen that the silk screen printing operation would initially print tee shirts and that he hoped to expand to “signs, banners and other large-scale media.” Woolfolk said that he hoped to open Sept. 1
Aldermen approved by 2 to 1 vote, payment of monthly claims totalling $44,018.22. The motion for payment was made by Alderwoman Teresa Dishmon and seconded by Alderman John Walton. Alderwoman Rachel Powell voted against payment.
“Some of this stuff in the docket of claims, I approve it; some of it I don’t,” Powell said before casting her “nay” vote.
