Hunting seasons in areas affected by Mississippi River flooding to remain closed until January 31

JACKSON – On January 20, 2016, during its regularly scheduled January meeting, the Mississippi Commission on Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, voted to keep hunting seasons along the Mississippi River closed until January 31, 2016.  The order also declares all areas inundated by floodwaters to be “no wake” zones.
MDWFP staff recommended that hunting seasons – other than waterfowl – currently closed due to high water, should remain closed through January 31.  Backwater flooding is too high for animals to return to their original habitat and food sources, even though, in some areas, the Mississippi River has dropped to just below flood levels.
MDWFP continues to discourage any boating in affected areas other than by property owners retrieving their belongings. Increased law enforcement presence will continue in the affected areas to patrol levees and enhance public safety for residents and property, and to enforce laws that protect wildlife.
