Como board approves plans for new store

By John Howell
Como officials gave the go-ahead Wednesday to a man who wants to build a sporting goods store on Highway 51, north of the Highway 310 intersection.

Joel Little appeared before Mayor Everette Hill, Alderwomen Sonia Heard and Teresa Dishmon and Alderman John Walton, seeking a privilege license from the town.

Little said that he had purchased 46 acres in the northeast quadrant of the Highway 51/310 intersection that includes the old Still’s Package Store building. Aldermen voted unanimously to approve Little’s request.

In other business at the special called meeting, town officials also voted to appoint Senatobia attorney Mildred Lesure as Como Municipal Judge. Lesure’s appointment followed acceptance of the resignation of Gaines Baker who had previously served as municipal judge. A second motion to set Judge Lesure’s pay at $500 monthly was also approved with a 3-0 vote. Alderwomen Ruby Higgenbottom and Rachel Powell did not attend.

In the only other business on the short meeting’s agenda, the board of aldermen voted to pay $120 to C and T Lock Service for lock changes on town property.
