Rebels have good practice, coach says

OXFORD  – It was a productive practice in the eyes of head coach Houston Nutt on Wednesday, with competition stepping up at several positions as the Rebels continue fall practice.

“We had a pretty good one today,” Nutt said. “We kept them out here a long time and had to use these lights. This was good work today. We hit some situational drills like third down and two minute drills. There was good execution on both sides, but we’re still making some mistakes we can’t let happen. But overall, it was a pretty good day today.”

Special teams and offensive line were two areas where the Rebels saw some depth emerging and competition for playing time possibly becoming a factor.

“A guy like George Helow is going to help us (on special teams),” Nutt said. “Reggie Hicks, LaDerrick Vaughn and Rishaw Johnson are some names that jump out real quickly among players who are currently in a back up role. You want some speed and playmakers at positions that are going to handle the ball and you want speed with the guys who are going to cover the kicks. As long as they play hard and run, they will be out there.”

Offensive line also was an area where Nutt began to identify some competition, with several players pushing their name into the mix.

“Brandon Green, Bradley Sowell and Rishaw Johnson are guys (who are emerging) – along with Reid Neely you are hoping comes back in there and adds to your depth,” Nutt said.

Ole Miss will continue fall practice before holding the annual Meet The Rebels Day on Saturday when the football team and coaching staff will be on hand to meet fans and sign autographs. The event will be held at the Indoor Practice Facility on campus and begins at noon on Saturday, August 16.

The Rebels will open the 2008 season on August 30, at home against Memphis. Kick-off is set for 6 p.m. at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
