Super Bowl contest set

Even though it is still hot and the best of the NFL season is not played until January, The Panolian will conduct a preseason Super Bowl contest.

This contest is open to the old football pro who gets them right every week and to those who just feel lucky.

The goal: pick the two teams who will play in the Super Bowl XLII (42) in Glendale, Ariz. February 3.

The catch: the contest ends September 5 at 5 p.m.

Groan, boo, hiss.

I have heard it all. This will make everything just a little bit more exciting.

I have even helped you out. A NFL schedule, complete with the pre-season games, is included in today’s edition on page B2. This way, you can see who is up against whom and their chances.

Look at the teams and keep up with them throughout the preseason. See who gets cut and who is kept. Some teams who do awful in the preseason can look good at the end of the regular season.

At the conclusion of the conference championships on January 20, the person who either picks the two teams who will participate in the Super Bowl or gets closest in the playoffs will win.

The Prizes: Prizes will go to the top three choosers. The grand prize will be a recliner and a television. Sizes, colors and sponsors are forthcoming.

Second and third places will receive Super Bowl goodies from area sponsors.

This will not replace our weekly football contest which covers the high school regular season schedule. This contest is something extra we have been playing with the last few years and have decided to give it a go this year.

The regular NFL season starts Thursday, September 6 and all entries must be at The Panolian office by that date.

So go ahead and get your pencils and papers ready. We will only accept original entries from The Panolian newspaper and no photo copies.

By the way, I will fill out one myself and put it in the envelope. I can’t win but I do want to see how close I come.

Happy picking.
