Referred to the grand jury were:
Donald Lester
, 2422 Barnacre Road, Batesville, charged with third offense DUI;
Sonya Crutcher of 904 E. Gay St., Charleston, charged with embezzlement from Springmaid;
Daryl Gordon of 120-D CR 309, Oxford, charged with embezzlement from Lowe’s;
Jeffery Young, 143 Ford Rd., Batesville, charged with aggravated assault;
Domika Williams, 538 Greenbrier, Courtland, charged with aggravated assault, possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana (less than one ounce), open container, DUI-other, and careless driving.

Simple assault
Two charges of simple assault by threat filed against Roy "Doug" Fowler of Bell Rd., Courtland, by Bob Shepard were remanded to the court files following an agreement reached by both parties.

Charges dismissed
A charge of simple assault filed by Angela Conley against Brenda Walters of Meadowview Apts., Batesville, was dismissed by Judge McKenzie after the affiant failed to appear in court to prosecute.

The judge also dismissed a charge of malicious mischief filed against Maurice Wilkins of 124 Jackson St., Batesville by Fred Black after Black failed to come to court to prosecute the case.

Shoplifting
Danea Worley of 107 Martin Luther King St. Apt. F-3, Batesville, pleaded guilty to shoplifting $71.16 worth of merchandise from Family Dollar Store.

She was fined $595.

Cases continued
Robert Grant of 99 Whippoorwill Rd., Pope, had his contempt of court case continued one week. He is to return with proof that his fines have been paid.

Steve Harris of 4060 Curtis Rd., Batesville, failed to appear to answer charges of carrying a concealed weapon and discharging a firearm in the city limits.

Willie G. McMillan of 217 Noble St., Batesville, is to return to municipal court on April 20 for a hearing on a careless driving charge which he contests. Judge McKenzie dismissed a charge of driving while his license is suspended after McMillan showed proof his license has been reinstated.

Traffic tickets
Traffic tickets handed out to young drivers dominated the docket. Sixteen drivers lined up to settle up with Judge McKenzie whose voice was reduced to a whisper by laryngitis.

Reginald Thornton of 311 Lincoln, Sardis, was fined $448 for driving while his license is suspended and speeding. He was enrolled in the adult defensive driving course.

Ronald C. Lancaster Jr. of 4815 Darling, Sledge, was fined $437 for speeding and driving while his license is suspended.

Justin Frederick of 432-C Tubbs Road, Batesville, was enrolled in defensive driving school. As a driver under age 21, he can have his speeding fine forgiven if he presents documentation that he has successfully completed the course.

Another young driver, Charlie Edward Cauthen III, 386 Main St., Courtland, gets the same deal if he completes the driving course for which he was enrolled following his receipt of a speeding ticket.

Vallene Owens of 115 Nikki Dr., Senatobia, has the same opportunity to keep her "running a red light" charge off her driving record, and have the fine forgiven if she shows that she has completed the driving course for young drivers.

Another young driver, Latoya M. Dudley of 16899 Oklahoma St., Coffeeville, was also enrolled in the driving school following a speeding charge. Judge McKenzie dismissed a charge of driving while her license is suspended when she showed proof that she has a valid license.

Also eligible to attend young driver’s school to keep his record clean was Thomas Earl Hampton Jr. of 935 Carver St. Ext., West Point. He was charged with speeding.

Judge McKenzie dismissed a charge of "no proof of insurance" when Joseph A. Foster of 1372 CR 73, Myrtle, presented proof that his vehicle is insured.

Alexander Weldon Ray of 8289 Highway 51, Courtland, has seven days to present to the court clerk proof that his vehicle is insured. The law allows drivers who receive a ticket for no insurance to have their fine lowered if they purchase insurance and provide proof to the court.

That’s what Pamela M. Latham of 242 Estridge St., Charleston, did. Her fine for the lesser charge was $155.

Tianna R. Daniels of 330 Greenhill Circle, Sardis, had a similar charge of no insurance, but Judge McKenzie lowered her fine when she showed documentation that she now has insurance on her vehicle. She was fined $155.

Another charge of no vehicle insurance brought a reduced fine of $155 when Joanna C. Alred of 220 Noble St., Batesville, showed proof that she has insurance.

Ricky Harris of 116-B M. Flowers Road, Batesville, was fined $174 for expired tag.

Stacy Allen Clay of 2650 Shiloh Road, Courtland, was fined $115 for careless driving.

Marshall Lee Weeks of 21 Peters Hill Rd., Charleston, was fined $251 for speeding and no proof of insurance.
