August 1 is a very important date for farm owners, operators and producers in Panola County. August 1 is the final date to report your acreage of planted crops, idled acres and acres devoted to the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) to the Panola County Farm Service Agency (FSA) office.

Library Expansion Project Nears Completion

BATESVILLE – Construction of the expansion at Batesville Public Library is nearing completion, First Regional Library System representative Jim Anderson told city leaders last week.
The City of Batesville project is funded with a library grant approved by the State of Mississippi.
City officials had to match 40 percent of the funds, which was done through a bond issue.
The expansion project will add 6,300 square feet to the existing library facility.

With national headlines heralding the rise of childhood obesity (nearly 15 percent of our nation’s youths are obese), it’s hard to find any stories about kids who are doing something to buck that trend.
Well, 11-year-old Aaron Wilson of Batesville is a great example of the exception to the rule. Wilson has outperformed more than 250,000 kids internationally to qualify for the Fitness Authority National Championships.

| Parents, kids urged to attend event |

BATESVILLE – A variety of games and activities are planned for the Back to School Carnival, supported by the Boys and Girls Club of Batesville and Panola County.
The event, sponsored locally in part by the Family Coaching Program, will be held Sunday, August 4, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Patton Lane Park in Batesville.
"This event is being held to help bring parents and their children together for an afternoon of fun," said organizer Terry Townsend. "We’re encouraging parents to bring their children to the event."

West Nile Virus |
| Birds from Panola and Hinds Counties have tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV) through Mississippi State Department of Health routine surveillance.
The State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory found four horses from Scott, Wilkinson, Hancock and Pearl River Counties to be infected with WNV. Additionally, tests are pending on two horses from Rankin and Jackson Counties suspected of having a mosquito-borne infection.

The Panolian staff hosted a NFL Sendoff Reception for recent NFL signees Josh Bright and Antuian Bradford Wednesday, July 17.
Community people from all over attended the reception and sent the two locals to their respective camps with warm well wishes.
Bright, of the Baltimore Ravens, and Bradford, of the Tennessee Titans, were attended by their immediate families and friends. |
