ND sweeps Winona in non-district contests

The North Delta Lady Green Wave rebounded from their first loss of the season against Delta Academy with a 43-35 victory over Winona Christian Thursday before taking a break for the Thanksgiving holidays.

North Delta overcame 22 turnovers and a 19-19 deadlock at halftime to improve its record to 5-1 on the season while Winona fell to 4-3 with the loss.

Sarah Johnson led the way with 12 points while Ginger Stephens and Ally Alford added 10 points each. Blakely Denman supplied six points with Mary Emily Morris and Magen Bollinger contributing with five and two points each.

North Delta completed the four game sweep of the Stars as the varsity boys came away with a 28-15 win in the nightcap.

Two early field goals by Johnson coupled with a Morris three pointer staked North Delta to an early 7-0 first quarter lead. North Delta led 11-6 after the first period before Winona went on a 8-0 run to take a 14-11 advantage with 2:53 remaining before halftime.

Denman and Johnson added a pair of baskets in the final minute of play before Alford converted a Winona turnover into a bucket at the buzzer to knot things up at 19-19 going to intermission. 

The second half got underway with Stevens connecting on a trey followed by a Johnson layup that gave the Lady Wave a 26-19 advantage. North Delta maintained its lead throughout the second half before taking a 37-27 lead late in the fourth quarter. 

ND varsity boys 28, Winona 15

In the varsity boys contest, Alex Greenlee’s six third-quarter points broke open a 11-11 game at halftime as the Wave evened its record to 3-3 after winning the low scoring affair. 

Avery Roland drained a big three pointer at the end of the third quarter to give the home team a 20-13 lead. Peyton Neal and Cole Devazier combined for eight points in the final stanza as North Delta’s defense held Winona to one field goal in the final period.

Roland and Neal paced North Delta with eight points while Devazier and Greenlee collected six in the winning effort.

North Delta junior high squads both came away with victories as the boys eased past Winona 43-18 while the girls came away with an exciting 32-30 victory. 

The Junior High Lady Wave trailed 22-15 going into the fourth quarter before rallying back as Faith Bollinger hit a game-tying three pointer with 1:19 remaining. Winona retook the lead 30-29 on a free throw  with under a minute to play before Ally Alford nailed a three-pointer from the corner with 43 seconds left to seal the victory.

Alford led all scorers with 20 points including 12 in the fourth quarter. Faith Bollinger provided three points while Denman, Hannah Bollinger, Kallie Brown and Sayle Stennett had two points each. Emy Cay Donaldson chipped in with one point.

Matt Burchfield recorded a season high 25 points to pave the way for the North Delta boys. Colin Hartman followed with eight while Chris Burchfield added seven. Layton Wells finished with two points. 

 North Delta resumes play Monday at Indianola followed by a trip to Calhoun Academy Dec.1 in a 4 p.m. tipoff.
