Have you noticed that Racing for Paws and Springfest are just three weeks away?

I have a special regard for the Racing for Paws event because I think it has done much to raise awareness in our community to get us up and moving. Couch potatoes have become walkers, walkers have become runners and so on.

Walking and running is more enjoyable in good company and nowhere can you find better company than among those along the Racing for Paws course. (151 have already signed up at this writing.)

Also, there’s the beneficiary — the Panola County Humane Society. How much they do to care for unwanted animals with so little funding. They describe themselves as a “shelter-less” rescue group, but they have created a foster care network to prepare unwanted dogs for adoption and then ship them to new homes  in other areas of the country.

They also offer a low-cost spay and neuter program to slow the endless cycle of litter after litter of unwanted puppies and kittens

“We are made up of individuals who care about what happens to animals in our area,” PCHS spokesperson Kim Strickland states.

Their work is made more difficult because there are so many in our county who don’t care about animals — allowing dogs and cats to procreate into an exponential population explosion, numbers that can boggle the mind.

But as discouraging as that may seem, PCHS volunteers keep on with their work, hoping to see the day when their efforts will result in a noticeable reduction in unwanted, mistreated animals in our midst.
