Batesville Rotary honors two for October

The Batesville Rotary Club during its October 18 meeting recognized Nelson Howell and Meredith Tidwell as students of the month for October.
The club recognizes seniors at North Delta School and South Panola High School each month of the school year. Students are selected by school personnel.
Nelson Howell, introduced by Headmaster Tommy Gunn, was selected from North Delta. Howell has served as class president and as a member of the student council for each of his four years. He is the son of John and Jennifer Howell.
He is a member of the National Honor Society and the National Spanish Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta. He has earned a place on the headmaster’s list in grades nine and 12; the honor roll in grades 10 and 11.
Howell plays tennis, having advanced to runner-up in both the north half competition and in state competition, playing singles. He enjoys playing guitar, basketball and weight lifting and is a member of the First Baptist Church in Batesville.
The North Delta senior said he plans to attend Ole Miss next year to major in biology with a goal of becoming a physical therapist, but he said that working in his family’s business, Batesville Tooling and Design, for his grandfather, Gary Blair, has also sparked an interest in business.
South Panola Choral Director Joe Bulloch, in introducing SP senior Meredith Tidwell, described her as having a “wonderful smile that is the face of the South Panola choral program.”
Tidwell has been recognized for her choral skills by her selection to receive the Choir Anchor Award. She is also a member of the student council, Junior Civitan, the National Honor Society, the Beta Club and the 21 Plus Club.
The daughter of Jennifer Tidwell and Lonnie Chrestman, Tidwell has earned a place on the superintendent’s list throughout high school and earned the highest grade in Advanced Placement English 3.
Tidwell is active in athletics with soccer, cross-country and track. She is a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church and enjoys fishing and hunting.
Tidwell plans to enter Northwest Mississippi Community College next fall, followed by Ole Miss. She plans to major in chemistry and “to be happy and be successful while doing it.”
