Batesville Tigers football takes two of three games from Greenwood

After two straight weeks on the road, the Batesville Tiger pee wee football teams opened their home slate Saturday morning by taking two of three games from the Greenwood Bulldogs.

Batesville (9&10’s)-14 Greenwood-6

Following the Bulldogs 14-0 victory in the 7-and-8 year-old contest, Batesville   took the following game as the Tiger defense forced four turnovers.

Michael Johnson, Jr. got Batesville on the board in the second quarter with a 13-yard run around left end to give the Tigers a 6-0 lead at halftime.

Batesville extended their lead to 12-0 in the third quarter when Kellen Norwood connected with Johnson on a 31-yard pass play at the 2:36 mark. The scoring drive was set up by Norwood’s interception one play earlier.

The Tiger defense closed out the scoring in the fourth quarter when Willie Butler tackled a Greenwood runner in the endzone for a safety. Edward Draper recorded two fumble recoveries for Batesville.

Batesville (11& 12’s)-12 Greenwood-0

The Tigers scored two first half touchdowns which proved to be enough as the defense threw a shutout.

Julius Pope set the tone early with a 42-yard run on the first play of scrimmage. Two plays later, David Hubbard hit Jaiden McKinney for a 30-yard touchdown play to give Batesville a 6-0 lead. Brock Ware accounted for the Tigers other touchdown as he corralled a deflected pass off a Greenwood defender with four minutes left before halftime.

Batesville will have an open date Saturday before returning to action Oct. 1 when they host Marks beginning at 10 a.m.
