Allen Eugene “Butch” Cummins, Sr., 66, passed away Friday, Feb. 26, 2021, at the Tallahatchie General Hospital Extended Care Facility.

How do you sum a man’s whole life in just a few paragraphs? It is impossible, but I will try. Butch Cummins was born July 1, 1954 to Richard and Arvetta (Parker) Cummins in Drew, Mississippi. He grew up in a Christian home.

I would say he suffered from dementia, but I am really not sure how much he suffered, I think he just lived in a different place. Now he has gone to live with Jesus.

He had two brothers, Buster (Kathy) and Jackie Joe, and two sisters, Sandra (Lori) and Delia. He is survived only by Sandra.

After graduating high school he attended Mississippi State University where he earned a degree in Entomology which he used in his lifelong career in the Ag business. Crop consultant, grain elevator management, farmer, levee surveyor, crop adjuster: just a few of the caps he wore but his MSU cap was his favorite.

We married (Deonna Bills) in 1973. We raised three sons together, Allen (Tristan) of Batesville, Andy (Karen and Ali) of Pope, and Beau (Jacklyn, Heartly and Kaylyn) of Petal. Our biggest and best accomplishment in life.

There was no place Butch would rather be than in the woods with his boys. He loved hunting. And he loved teaching them to love it also. They will never forget the life lessons he taught while hunting and fishing. Good memories, fun times-not so much while farming.

Butch loved to sing. He spent a good portion of his life in church. Whether singing tenor in the choir or a quartet, teaching Sunday school in the nursing home, prison ministry, or being a lay minister, he enjoyed it all.

Aggravation was his favorite game. He held a Master’s degree. If you were lucky enough to be on the receiving end you knew he loved you.

For many years you could find him on the football field on Friday nights officiating high school games. It did not matter if he was right or wrong that uniform made him right. And he loved being right! We know he was not always right but he was ours. And he was loved. And he is missed.
