Dr. Deck Stone, 90, of Batesville, passed away on Oct. 6, 2020 at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis.

Funeral services were Thursday, Oct. 8,  at the First United Methodist Church in Batesville, with the family receiving friends one hour prior to the service. The interment was at Magnolia Cemetery in Batesville. Ed Woodall and Rev. Kerry Powell officiated.

Deck was born May 15, 1930 to the late Van Dorn Stone, Sr. and Jennie Irene Billingsley Stone in Memphis, TN. Deck attended Lambert High School where he was valedictorian of his class. Following high school, Deck joined the U.S. Navy where he proudly served his country. Deck received his Bachelors from The University of Mississippi in Oxford.

 

He attended The University of Mississippi in Jackson for two years, then went on to Tulane University in New Orleans to complete his medical schooling. In 1957, Dr. Stone opened Stone Clinic in Batesville. Over time the clinic added hospital rooms and eventually the clinic became South Panola Hospital. The facility was renamed Parkview Clinic where it stands today. Dr. Stone worked at the clinic, serving his community and patients until retirement in January of 2020.

Dr. Stone was a member of The Cross Board and responsible for the instillation of our amazing Cross that will shine tall and strong for other generations for years after we are all departed from this earth. Dr. Stone was an avid South Panola football fan. He served as the team physician for years. Dr. Stone was inducted to the 1st Class of the South Panola Sports Hall of Fame receiving the Community Service Award.

In his spare time, Dr. Stone enjoyed staying busy with tennis, fishing, and collecting fossils. Deck and his wife Sandra loved to travel. They made many trips to the Smoky Mountains, Florida and Canada together.

The loving family he leaves behind to carry on his legacy includes his wife, Sandra Lee Campbell Stone of Batesville; children, Carol Anne Stone Lightsey and the late Robert of Batesville, Dr. Lynne Diane Stone Kebert (Dr. Kent L.) of McComb, Dr. Glen Henry Stone (Dr. Tu Lam) of Oxford; grandchildren, Dr. Sandra Lynn Lightsey Bright (Josh) of Batesville, Robert Bradford “Brad” Lightsey (Kerry) of Batesville, Alan Kebert (Shauna) of Athens, GA., Karen Lynn Kebert of Olympia, WA., Dr. Laura Claire Kebert of Memphis, Richard Glen Stone (Bennie) of Senatobia, Garret Michael Stone (Jamie) of Germantown, TN., Cameron Peyton Cummings of Oxford, Jackson Deck Stone of Oxford, and Brec Van Stone also of Oxford;  great grandchildren, Sadie Bright, Anson Bright, Kate Bright, Easton Lightsey, Carter Lightsey, Reise Lightsey, Lance Lusk, Riley Stone, and Luke Stone.

In addition to his parents, Dr. Stone was preceded in death by his twin, Van Dorn Stone, Jr. and his sister Yona Stone Holroyd.

He will be greatly missed by his family and community he served for so many years.
