Frederick Eugene Carter

Frederick Eugene Carter, age 85, of Covington, GA, passed away Thursday, October 31, 2019. He was born in Newark, Ohio to Guy and Martha Carter.

After graduation from Newark High School, Fred enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served his country honorably as a radio mechanic onboard a mine sweeper.  After his service in the armed forces, he returned to Granville, OH and started work as a journeyman carpenter at a local manufacturing plant.

“Mr. Fred” distinguished himself by becoming a plant engineer, supervisor, and later plant manager.  His long career included managing lawnmower production plants in McRae, GA and Sardis.

After retiring from industry, he was self-employed as a master carpenter.  Among his many building projects, he was responsible for the restoration of a church in Sardis and the construction of a fellowship hall at a church in Batesville.

His leisure activities included golf, fishing, and numerous carpentry projects for family and friends. Fred and his wife, Patty, were avid square dance partners for over 30 years. He was an active member of St. John Catholic Church in Sardis, and St. Augustine Catholic Church in Covington, GA, where he enjoyed cooking hash browns for the monthly breakfast fellowships.

He was preceded in death by his lovely wife of 62 years.  Survivors include his son Jeff Carter and his wife, Kay, of Griffin; daughter Phyllis Adams and her husband, Buddy, of Alamo; and daughter Krista Yeomans and her husband, Kevin, of Covington; brothers, Larry Carter of Licking County, OH and Chuck Carter and his wife, Mamie, of Arcadia, FL; grandchildren Kenny, Kari, Katelyn, Kyle, Kelly, and Kayla; Cory; great-grandchildren Evelyn, Abigail, and Jensen.

The service for Mr. Carter will be held on Saturday, Nov. 9,  at 2:30 p.m. at Saint Augustine Catholic Church, 11524 Hwy 278 E., Covington, GA.

A reception for family and friends will follow the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Diabetes Association. Memorial donations can be made through their website at www.diabetes.org or by mail using a printable form found on the website.

 

Elroy Ford

Funeral services for Elroy Ford, 58, of Courtland, will be held Saturday, Nov. 9, at 2 p.m. at Salem M.B. Church with Pastor Larry Itson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery under the direction of Cooley’s Mortuary.

He died Nov. 3, 2019, at Panola Medical Center.

Visitation is today (Nov. 8) from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with a family wake from 4 to 6 p.m.

 

Shirley Swindoll Kennedy

Shirley Swindoll Kennedy, 82, of Eads, TN, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2019, near Batesville.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9,  at Fisherville Baptist Church in Eads, TN with burial at the Church cemetery. The family will be receiving friends today (Nov. 8) at Wells Funeral Home in Batesville from 5:30 to  7:30 p.m. and also Saturday from 11:30 a.m. until service time at Fisherville Baptist Church.

She was born Oct. 10, 1937 in Water Valley to the late Hubert Woodward Swindoll and Ethel Bolen Swindoll. She was a member of Enon Baptist Church of Batesville and Fisherville Baptist Church of Eads.

 

Michael  Troy Rodgers

Funeral services for Michael Troy Rodgers, 52, will be Saturday, Nov. 9, at 1 p.m. at St. James COGIC in Como. Burial will be at Askew Grove Cemetery under the direction of Rodgers Funeral Home.

He died Oct. 31, 2019, in Southaven. He was a plumber.

 

Wayne S. Stephens

Wayne S. Stephens,  79, died Sunday, Nov. 3, 2019, in Clarksdale.

The family will have a private memorial service.

Wells Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
