Mary Avery

Mary Avery, age 46, passed away Thursday, October 17, 2019 at the Memorial Hospital in Gulfport. She was the wife of Richard Avery.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced tomorrow afternoon. Wells Funeral Home has charge.

Bobby Frank Avant, Sr.

Funeral services for Bobby Frank Avant, Sr., 78, will be held Sunday, Oct. 20, at Ebenezer M.B. Church in Como at 4 p.m. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 3 p.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery under the direction of Rodgers Funeral Home.

Avant, a retired postman, died Oct. 14, 2019, in Southaven.

 

Larry Charles Casey

Funeral services for Larry Charles Casey, 60, will be held Saturday, Oct. 19, at 2 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Zannie Leland, Jr., officiating. Burial will be at New Bethlehem Church cemetery.

Formerly of Batesville, he died Oct. 10, 2019, at Washington Med Star Hospital in Washington, D.C.

He was born March 2, 1959, in Batesville to Roy Casey, Sr., and Mary L. Casey.

Visitation is today (Oct. 18) from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

 

Lura “Tootie” Pittman Ewing

Lura “Tootie” Pittman Ewing passed away Sunday, Oct. 13, 2019, at her home in Senatobia.

She was the tenth of twelve children born to Alma Lloyd and Louis Patton Pittman who preceded her in death. She is also preceded in death by three sisters, Ruby Scruggs, Linda Lee, and Vera Lucius along with two brothers, Carl “Buddy” Pittman and Charles David Pittman.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Robert B. Ewing, Jr. of Senatobia; three children, Candy Murry of Reading, PA, Robert B. Ewing, III of Mont Clare, PA, and Stephanie Wosko of Coatsville, PA; seven grandchildren, Cameron and Celia Murry, Kieran and Morrigan Wosko, and Dylan, Lucy, and Owen Ewing; four sisters, Sarah Darby of Enid, Lula Morrissey of Batesville, Jenny Waldo of Memphis, and Bonnie Bass of Huntingdon, TN; and two brothers, Terry and Mack Pittman both of Batesville.

Lura was born in a small area of Panola County called Locke Station. She completed nursing school in late 1971 and began work as a floor nurse at the new hospital in Sardis. After marrying the love of her life, she moved to Memphis and worked on the floor at the Methodist Hospital where they performed eye surgeries. After working there a while, she moved to Charlotte, NC where she worked at a hospital on a floor where heart surgeries were performed.

She moved several more times and always found a new hospital to work. Lura and her husband retired in 2003 and they returned back to the mid-south in Senatobia.

The immediate family will have a private memorial service at a later date.

 

Mrs. Mary Gray Moody

Mrs. Mary Gray Moody,  93,  of Courtland,  passed away on Monday, Oct. 14, 2019, at Oxford Health and Rehab in Oxford.

Mrs. Moody was born on April 26, 1926, in Blytheville, AR to the late Laura and Ira Gray. She graduated from Blytheville High School in 1944 and then from Memphis State University with her bachelor’s degree in education.

She served as a schoolteacher in the Memphis City School system for 29 years and prior to that she served as a clerk in the fingerprint division of the FBI. Mrs. Moody was was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Batesville where she was active in the Truth Seekers Sunday school class, served as a member of the mature adult choir, and was active in the UMW.

She was a breast cancer survivor who was involved with Reach to Recovery, and enjoyed filling her time through reading, traveling, working puzzles, fishing, and serving as a volunteer at the North Mississippi Fish Hatchery in Enid.

Mrs. Moody was active in the Batesville Woman’s Club and served as president of the state association for one year. Left behind to cherish her memory is her family which includes her three sons, Tommy Moody of Courtland,  Terry Lee Moody (Debra) of Covington, TN, and Curtis Edward Moody (Sherry) of Holly Springs,; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, W.H. Moody; two brothers, Tom and Hardy; and her parents.

Funeral services will be held today (Oct. 18) at 11 am at First United Methodist Church in Batesville with Rev. Ed Woodall officiating. Visitation will be held in the church from 9 – 11 a.m.

Interment will take place at 2:30 p.m. in Forest Hill South Cemetery in Memphis.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 797, Batesville, MS 38606.

Arrangements are entrusted to Dickins Funeral Home.

 

Richard Pittman, Sr.

Funeral services for Richard Pittman, Sr., 72, will be Monday, Oct. 21, at noon at Second Concord M.B. Church with Pastor Ronnie Jamison officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery under the direction of Cooley’s Mortuary.

He died Oct. 14, 2019, at Baptist Memorial  Hospital North MS  in Oxford. He was born Oct. 30, 1946, to Willie Pittman and Gillie V. Pittman Thompson. He was retired from the State of Mississippi and a member of Second Concord.

Visitation will be Sunday, Oct. 20, from 1 to 5 p.m. at Cooley’s Mortuary. His body will lie in repose at the church from 11 a.m. until the start of the service on Monday.
