After a short regular board meeting last Tuesday, Oct. 1, the Sardis City Board went into executive session to discuss possible litigation from both the Police and Public Works Department.

The one matter discussed  that saw some action was to pursue collection procedures against Prophetic Ministries on the rent of the building.

Rashad Franklin asked why he needed a $925 permit from ABC if he was only serving beer and light win. ABC permits are for establishments who sell more potent alcoholic beverages.

ABC also issues on-premise consumption permits, which is what the Sardis ordinance requires, according to board attorney Tommy Shuler.

Virdia Spain asked the board about opening a daycare, but she needs her road fixed on Highway 315. She was told to go the Panola County Board meeting. Spain said she had been there and was told to come to the city board.

The claims docket was approved for $452,911.83. Mendrop Engineering submitted its second invoice for $5,802.50 for the MDOT sidewalk project. Argo Construction submitted its third of five payments of $60,834.83 for the Edwin Circle project. The board approved these payments.

Alderman-at-large Michael Price wanted the city to do one hospitality tent at an upcoming football ballgame. The board agreed as long as it was at one upcoming basketball game also. They agreed to spend up to $400 at each event.

On outdoor equipment at the walking trail, the color was changed from gray to blue.

In the city board meeting from Sept. 17, Mayor Lula Palmer requested to be refunded the $499.04 she reimbursed the city for damage to a police vehicle.

Aldermen would not pay the repair bill because they knew nothing about the damage. They told the Mayor to pay the bill and she did. Moore’s Body Shop did the repairs to the gas tank.

Her request died for lack of a motion.

The item was on the docket for Oct. 1 but the Mayor did not address the matter. She has contacted the state Attorney General’s office on her next steps to recover the money. She said she was told by the office not to pay it but she had already paid when she got the opinion.
